New! The Red Heart Super Saver Palette - thank you to BetwixtTheStitch!
Welcome to Stitchboard! Feel free to sit and stay awhile. Check out our new Premier features. In addition to the ability to create larger patterns (up to 500 stitches wide), illusion knitting and private labeling (no more worries about editing those pesky and messy PDFs), we've just introduced Filet Crochet, our most popular request! We have many more features planned, too!

Hello all!!
i've loved cross stitch for yeeeears and decided to get back into it. I've only ever used kits but I'd really love to get into creating and making my own deisgns. I'm based in the UK but don't really know what I'm looking for when it comes to the basics so would love recommendations on brand names to use / avoid for the tools needed.
Many thanks and i look forward to seeing more from you all <3
Hi, and thanks for your feedback!
I'm currently winding up some more server updates for future growth of the program and help handling the increased usage.
Once I finish these internal changes I'll be back to program updates. One long-awaited feature will be the ability to do final pattern editing before printing.
There will also be an ability to save your work so you could get your settings the way you like and save them. Then you could come back at a later date, load your settings from before, possibly make further changes, create a new pattern, and save the new settings if you like. Time will tell if there will be limits to the number of saved "work" files. I think this will fill the needs you mentioned.
I'll know more about when a bunch of new features will begin rolling out as soon as I finish the system upgrades but rest assured, I'm working on it on our end.

We've had a couple reports of incorrect formats of left-handed crochet and illusion knitting word charts. Actually they were the same as the right-handed charts except the numbering was correct.
This was my fault. I had previously inserted the left-handed code to reverse the word charts but apparently never made it live and subsequently wrote over the new code. SO, I just placed it back in, tested it, and quickly made it live before I forgot and wrote over it again!
Sorry, just me getting old!

I'm using Paint also, maybe that's my problem, LOL! I will try one of these programs and see if that helps my issue. I'll be looking for the written knitting patterns (I just prefer knitting to crocheting
I may also just buy the package for the year and that would fix my issues for size also.

Teacher4lyfe,
Welcome!
I'm guessing
you're crocheting. The key to calculating your finished afghan size
will be finding your gauge. Your gauge will tell you how many
stitches you're getting per inch.
A gauge
swatch is making a square with your chosen yarn and hook. Your
square should be at least 4 inches x 4 inches (or larger - some say
at least 5x5 is optimal). When you measure out how many stitches in
your square and divide by the number of inches (avoiding edges in
this calculation), that will tell you how many stitches per
inch.
For example, let's say you find you're
crocheting 5 stitches per inch and your pattern is 100 stitches
across. So 100 divided by 5 is 20 inches.
There's no one number that can be given for all
projects, since gauge is different for everyone. You and I could crochet the same number
of stitches with the same fiber and the same hook and still have
completely different gauges. And almost nobody likes making
swatches. Especially when you really want to get started on your
project! But swatches are well worth the effort; the alternative is
to make something, get almost or all the way through the project,
only to find out the size is wrong, particularly if it's a garment.
So unless the size of a finished
project really, really doesn't matter (a scarf, for instance),
swatching is always the best way to ensure your project isn't too
large or too small.
