Has anyone looked at the northern lights shawl created by annem? If so could you tell me how to make the written instructions out all she has is the graph. And I can't understand it.

Silvertiger,
Can you please give a link to where this project is located? I'm not sure of the particulars of this one. I'll see what I can do, whether or not I can understand the chart, once I know which one it is.
Is it a chart that was created with the freePatternWizard and the colors are indistinguishable, e.g., too many shades of, say, blue for the human eye to discern?
Thanks!

I googled "northern lights shawl annem" and found this on ravelry ...
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/revontuli--huivi-northern-lights
while I'm not that terribly experienced in knitting, I'll take a look at it and see if I can figure out what's going on too.

Silvertiger,
I see what you mean ... I *think* I've been able to figure out the first 5 rows ... then when I got to row 6, I tried to count the number of stitches in my mind, but since I'm absolutely horrible with numbers, I'm not sure I'm right. I would have to actually knit this up to confirm, and I would have to google the left and right leaning M1's as I don't know how to do those yet. If I have time, I'll see what I can do here.
In the meantime, I'll give you the first 5 rows as I understand them ... maybe someone else will be able to confirm I'm doing this correctly as I've never really knit from a chart before ... hopefully, this can at least get you started??
Cast on 5 stitches
Row 1 - [WS] knit all stitches
Row 2 - K2 * M1 [right leaning increase]** purl repeat from * to **
1 time K2 [7 stitches]
Row 3 - K2 purl to last 2 stitches, K2 [Do this for all WS rows]
[except rows 137, 139 and 141 which are all K - see her notes]
Row 4 - K2 * M1 [left leaning increase] M1 [right leaning increase] **
purl repeat from * to ** 1 time K2 [9 stitches]

Stitchboard Admin, the pattern is for free on Ravelry.com. just search for Northern Lights shawl and you'll see it there. I'm sorry that I couldnn't provide a link, still problems with the computer.
StitchMeKnot, yes this is the pattern, and I have since then found written out instructions by some one else, but I thank you for your help.

Debbie,
Thanks for the link and for writing out the first 5 rows! I'm not a chart knitter, either...never learned that years ago, as nobody spoke of charts like that. I didn't know there was such a thing for at least 20 years after I became a knitter!
Silvertiger,
Please do tell where you've found the instructions written out. That's really a gorgeous pattern!
I see what you mean about the instructions as they are...chart, chart, chart. Some say charts are easier to follow, and perhaps that's so, but they make knitting difficult, IMO. (Same with crochet charts.) I keep trying to sit down and learn how to read them, but it's all soon forgotten.

I'm glad you found the written instructions ... I got another migraine and was not able to finish this. If there is some interest, I could explain the process I went through to get the first five rows.

Debbie,
If your migraines aren't plaguing you and you have some time, perhaps you'd like to give people who are unfamiliar with charts some pointers about how to read them.
No need to reinvent the wheel or anything, since someone has apparently already written out the pattern, but just something in general about chart reading would be helpful. But don't try to do that with a migraine, okay?

Melanie,
I'd love to do this once the headache has subsided enough that I can function again.
I'll look for a simple graph with some fairly easy stitches and work up a little tutorial. Probably won't get to this for at least a week or so, depending, but I'm actually looking forward to doing this.

Debbie,
Thank you...that sounds wonderful!
No rush...just take care of your head and work on it when you feel like it. I can't work on something so intense with a headache, either. It's impossible.
Hoping you're feeling better very, very soon.

Debbie,
You're very welcome.
The way I see it, doing something creative is interesting...but by no means is it mandatory. Just take care of yourself. Nobody's going to have a big problem if they can't get that info right away.

Hi Switchboard Admin I found the written instructions on www.momsbudget.com. it's in PDF format the lady that posts it is on ravelry. There is a link there for her page on there as well
