Best yarn for graphgan??
February 4, 2017 at 10:49:17 AM

I am wanting to make a graphgan from a picture of a recently deceased friend. This will be my first graphgan and would love input on which yarn you experienced graphganers (not sure if that is a word) feel makes the best blanket. Softness and weight of blanket when finished and durability are big factors for me. Thank you so much for your input!!!!!

Great question...would love to hear what people are using for their graphghans!  Smile

Hi cwcoup, what a lovely memorial to your friend.

As for what yarn is best, it really comes down to your preferences. I like the Caron One Pound even though it has fewer colors.

I have used the Deborah Norville, and though I love the softness and the quality, I find that it doesn't work well when weaving all those ends because of the smoothness of it.
I imagine that Simply Soft would be difficult to keep the tails hidden, too.

I haven't used the Red Heart for a graphgan, but a lot of people in my crochet group do.

The Herrschners is a tad bit thinner than Red Heart, but it does have a lot of colors and is a bit less expensive.

So there's my two cents, hope there is some info that helps you decide.

Sherry,

Thanks so much for the great input!  Kiss

I've had the trouble you mentioned with the Simply Soft.  I've never used it for a graphghan, but for other projects, there were some issues with weaving tails.  It's also a bit thinner so I've had to use a larger hook (or needles) to get the right gauge, as well (which can make it too loose or lacy), and it's too soft to use for some stitch patterns, as it doesn't really hold up to them.  I've used it for baby blankets in the past, and for that it worked quite well.

Red Heart is what I hear about from a lot of people, due to the number of colors and easy availability.
