Crocheting a prototype of a prototype?

Has anyone ever crocheted a prototype of a prototype?

I'm designing on a large project, a market bag, and need to try out two ideas to see which one makes more sense structurally.  LOL, I thought making one prototype was enough...but now am thinking since the "real" piece is so large, perhaps a mini one.  Or two, to try both options.

So have you ever done anything like that?  LOL, or am I just weird?    Any suggestions?

Oh, how cool...so you've made mini versions to see how patterns would work larger?    That sounds especially nice for toys...then you get a two-for-one thing!  Which is kind of what I'm hoping to have with this! 

The project is simple, but I'm not sure structurally what to do at a certain point, so I'm hoping I can figure it out by working at least one version, if not both, but without working it so honking big as it is now!  This thing is pretty wide and tall, so if I have to frog a whole bunch, I won't be happy.  With a smaller piece, it should technically let me know which idea is structurally viable!

Thanks for the feedback, and I agree...if anyone else wants to chime in, I'd love to hear about what you do!
