Mitered squares (short rows)

After making a beautiful pillow of mitered squares (from Iris Schreier's wonderful "Modular Knits"), I was hooked on this technique! Does anyone else enjoy this fascinating technique as I do? I put "Knit to Be Square" on my list last holiday season, and received it. Let's just say I haven't stopped drooling yet!

I have Modular Knits but haven't made anything from it. I found a
potholder
coaster, sorry, somewhere for free that used the same technique and liked it a lot. But I haven't tried anything else. How is working from the book? Did you make anything else?

Aside from the pillow, I've made the eyeglass case and the "holes scarf." The latter caused a lot of frustration (due to operator error), because I somehow lost count, and frogging stitches with this technique can cause complete confusion and utter disaster. After starting and frogging several times, starting again from scratch and discarding a lot of yarn that was starting to look worn (it was cotton), I got wise and wove in a strand of contrasting color yarn at a point where it was pretty easy to frog back
to
, where I could start again without confusion. I still messed up...but at least the frogging was contained within a certain number of rows, and I didn't have to start completely over again.
So if you plan to make anything complex from this book, that's my advice...frequently weave in contrasting strands of yarn in rows where you can frog back
to
them. It's a lot easier to pull those out later when the stitching is finished than to start all over again from the beginning when you're more than halfway finished, due to a miscount!
Another important thing is to check out the errata from this author, in case anything you make from the book has corrections:

Thx! I was thinking of trying the pinwheel purse, maybe I'll be brave enough now after I finish a couple things I started.

Thx again, I've joined the Circle and am looking forward to some interesting discussions, maybe a little inspiration to start my pinwheel purse.

I got the book modular knits and am trying a modified version of the triangular scarf using a very fine yarn and size 3 needles.

I haven't tried that one...yet! (Because I don't have enough WIPs, LOL!
) There are so many nice patterns in that book, and the techniques themselves are so intriguing!
