Tunisian Cable hat

I've been working out this cabled hat design in Simply Soft Light, it's really such a nice yarn.
The color isn't true, this looks a bit orangey. The actual red is a bit deeper.

Sherry,
Wow, if I didn't know better, I'd say that was knit, not crocheted!
It looks
amazing
.
You've got to write up a pattern for this one! It's so close to the wavy cables that are found in knitting. Is this difficult to make? Would you consider it okay for a beginner, or is it more of an intermediate thing?
Love the color, too...deep red is soooooooo nice!
This looks like a hat I would wear after making. I wear a hat now, with the cold weather, but it's just a store-bought thing (not knit or crocheted) and I really don't like it all that much. I don't like hats in general, so for something to look that nice, it has to be spectacular!
Love!

Melanie,
Thank you.
I'm actually thinking it might be more intermediate, first because it's worked mostly in the round with a double ended hook. Maybe because of the cables, secondly.
I don't think it's that difficult, but then again, it may be difficult to write in a way that others can understand what's in my head.
Which, of course, is why we have our patterns tested.
I want it to be a slouchy hat, so I'm still working out how much taller to make it and such.
I may actually have to make a few more before it's truly pattern worthy. The blue one will be a tad different, with eyelash yarn trim, so the gauge will be a bit different.
So there may be one in my future too.

Sherry,
You're very welcome!
Actually, I love the idea of a more advanced project, particularly something intermediate. There are a lot of projects for beginners...it's nice to have an option to stretch one's creativity!
Ugh, trying to explain techniques in patterns can be sooooooooo difficult.
Are you going to make a non-slouchy hat version?
I think it would be wonderful for you to have different gauge versions!
There are often things I want to make, but the gauges can be far different than what I want.
Awwww, how neat that there will be one in your future, too!
It can be so frustrating to make so many beautiful things for others...and not have one of your own! (LOL, sigh, I learned that one when making dishcloths.)

Melanie,
I was thinking of doing a non slouchy version,
wander through my head much?
One of the other things I've been thinking on is that the SS Light is a
very
thin light weight yarn that could just as easily be considered a 2 instead of a 3.
So then I start wondering if I should work it up in a sport weight, a 2 ply, or what?
Or should I write it by measurements instead?
ie; ch multiples of 6, plus 5 to measure x inches........and so on
I'd love some feedback on this from anyone reading.

Sherry,
LOL, like my husband and I always say, "Get out of my head!"
I personally don't mind working by measurements, but I have a feeling (and could be
very
wrong) most people prefer to have more specifics for a pattern...so I think by weight is the best bet. I'd love to hear what other people have to say, though!
Do you think most people have certain yarns (weights) in mind when choosing a pattern? I know there are many times I've looked at a pattern and thought, "Oh, that purple WW variegated would be perfect for this!" only to be disappointed when I find out it's for fingering yarn or something.

Melanie,
I don't really know about most people, I certainly have at least colors in mind when I pick out a pattern. Sometimes I think it will work with something I have, only to find that it won't.
All I know for sure is that the weight standards are so broad as to not be useful at all.
The SS Light is considered a light worsted, however it's so fine that it could just as easily have been put into the fine or baby category.
So the gauge would be totally off with a true sport weight.
When I started designing this pattern, I knew I was working with a lighter than "light" yarn.
But I seriously do not want to start recommending specific brands or lines. Come to think of that, maybe it's exactly what the manufacturers want. Maybe they
are
the CYC.
Things were certainly easier before the CYC came to be.

Sherry,
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who chooses patterns with specific colors in mind!
I've had all kinds of problems with the current weight standards, too.
Like you, I think they're too broad based and make things more difficult, not less.
I've bought many yarns, all excited about the things I'd make with them, and they didn't work...no way, no how.
SS Light would be strange as a light worsted, considering regular SS is more of what I'd consider a light worsted, almost a sport weight. Matter of fact, when the Magicord Machine was first sold, nothing thicker than sport weight was recommended for it, and I knew
many
people who used regular SS with the Magicord Machine, as it was so light, it never jammed the machine!
I love the idea that you're thinking of different yarn weights for your pattern.
I agree about not recommending specific brands or lines. People who can't get certain yarns could have problems otherwise...I know I hate when designers recommend specific yarns and I can't get even close!
Wow, you know, you're probably right about the CYC being made up of the manufacturers...and if that's the case, it sounds pretty counter-productive for them to designate such broad weight categories.
IMO, you're right...things were far easier before we had the CYC numbering system. I don't know why they had to change it. Seemed the old system worked better. If anything, they could have refined the old or made up a smarter new system.

Melanie,
I'm sure we're not the only ones that have problems with the new weight standards, I suspect that most people do. Of course if they've been stitching for less than 30 years, they don't even realize that the problem is the yarn.
I agree that SS is more sport weight, so you see my problem here.
I guess all I can do is work it up in several different ones, and maybe include the measurements.
Maybe if enough people complained, they might consider at least refining the new system so that it's not so broad.
I've even come across yarn that was classified as a medium worsted when it really should have been a 2 category.
But you know how it is, if you use a larger hook you could get it into the very low end of the 4 category.
Way to broad to be useful.

Sherry,
I never thought of that, but I'm sure you're right...plenty of other people must be having problems with the new weight standards, too, but the newer stitchers don't have much to compare it with and probably shrug their shoulders and think, "Oh, well."
I definitely see the problem you're having with SS Light. SS itself should be categorized the way SS Light currently is. If a yarn is that thin, it's got to be correctly noted, or a lot of people will be
very
frustrated.
Working the hat in several different weights would be
extremely
helpful, no doubt!
People who don't design would love to pick a yarn weight and then work on it.
You're probably right...if enough people complained, they could then make a much better system. And I wonder if they realize there isn't much they'd have to do to make it palatable.
Ugh, so with you on the different categories being changeable with a larger hook. Have had that with published yarn gauges on packages.
Yeah, because using a K hook on a thin yarn is sooooooooo realistic.
Way too broad to be useful is right.

Melanie,
I highly doubt that people will complain about it though, the CYC even has the younger designers relying on them now.
Perhaps the answer is just to use what I know, since I know this yarn should really be classified as a 2, the pattern should call for a 2.
I could work it up in a true sport weight, then decide which I like best and go from there.

Sherry,
You're right...the younger designers are using those same too-broad designations because it's all they know.
Honestly, I'd just use the old terminology. If people can get used to newfangled, they can get used to oldfangled, too.
Love your idea of working with the true sport weight, then branching out.

Melanie,
I'll give it a whirl, when I get a chance.
I honestly don't think I'll like it in a sport weight,
but I might surprise myself.

Sherry,
Hope it all works out well...I always love the looks of what you design, and every time I'm surprised and pleased by whatever new thing you're making!
Yeah, sport weight can be a bit tedious, sigh, just because it takes so much more time than, say, a worsted.

Melanie,
Thank you for that.
The yarn I'm working with now is much lighter than sport, so it's taking a long time as well.
I'm afraid I won't like the sport weight with the nature of the tunisian knit. But I'll certainly give it a fair shot.
