Lots of Projects
June 16, 2014 at 3:48:11 PM

I'm working on quite a few things currently.

This first block is supposed to be a hibiscus flower from the stitchboard chart I made.  I think it would look better in a single color because the multi-colored yarn is a bit... distracting. I also think I made a few counting mistakes, but overall it still looks like a flower so that's something.  I might touch up some of the white parts with some cross-stitching and then crochet another block to sew to this one as a pillow.

My other main project right now is this shawl. I found the pattern on allfreecrochet.com and I'm about halfway done. I ran out of yarn and haven't been to the store in a while so it's currently on hold until I get another two skeins.

And just for fun, here's another shawl I made using the same yarn in a different pattern. Both are going to be Christmas presents for some aunts this year.

Love everything here!  Kiss

I love the colors of the hibiscus block (that's a gorgeous pattern, BTW!), but you're absolutely right...the variegated colors stitched on that white background are too close(?), maybe?  I think black would be too dark, though...so perhaps a solid color in the place of the variegated.  Also...if you were to use a solid color that's one of the colors in the variegated, you could then use the variegated as a border...that would be oooooooooooo pretty, IMO, because those colors really pop!

Another way to do it (not sure if this would work) might be to take a color that matches the variegated, yet isn't part of it...purple, perhaps? and make the design out of that color, then use the variegated for the background.  Or vice versa.

Whatever the case, even with the white kind of blending too much with the variegated, it still looks lovely!  Kiss

Now, the shawls...droooooooooooooool!  Kiss  Lucky aunts!  Both patterns are absolutely beautiful!  Kiss

Are you going to go with the same color when you get back to the store, or will you be adding a different color?  The nice thing is that would go with so many choices!  Kiss

Thank you! I think I'm going to get some bright blues and maybe some other neon solids to make more of the hibiscus blocks (and the other tropical patterns).  I mainly used the variegated and white because that's what I had on hand and didn't want to spend money on more yarn until I knew what the finished pattern would look like hahaha. Maybe using the variegated to join them all together would look good?

I plan on using the same color of yarn to finish my shawl. I'm using Caron Simply Soft in the color charcoal heather, again mainly because that's what I had on hand.  Cool  I'm in a constant battle against hoarding yarn so I try to use up what I have... but then I think I'm running out so I buy more Embarassed

If you're interested, the first shawl pictured is from this pattern: http://jessieathome.com/2014/01/extended-ripple-free-crochet-pattern.html

I'm not sure the written instructions are 100% right, but the stich chart at the bottom of that page seems to be correct.  And I recommend using a larger hook size. I'm using a size H and the spaces in the "fan" part aren't as large as I'd like.

The second shawl is from the Caron website:
http://www.yarnspirations.com/pattern/crochet/pink-ribbon-shawl

It's a pretty great pattern. It was really easy to follow and the shawl worked up pretty quickly. I definitely plan on making more of this design in more colors.  I have this lofty goal of making all my Christmas presents this year and I'm only 1/5 of the way done. Oh well, 6 more months left to work on them!

Bright blues would work so well with that pattern!  LOL, know exactly what you mean about wanting to use what you have on hand...I'm making a very orange bag...because I have orange left over!

Oooh, I think the variegated would be perfect for joining blocks together!  Kiss

Simply Soft is a wonderful yarn...it has such nice sheen and great drape to it, as well.  Smile

You definitely have great control if you try not to buy more yarn!  I really should try to use up more...but then I see a new project and think, "Wouldn't that be great made with this?"  Embarassed

Thanks for the links to both shawls...I can't decide which one I like more, as they're both beautiful!  Kiss  And thank you for the hint about using a larger hook than recommended on the first pattern.  It seems patterns are all over the place with hook sizes these days...too large, too small, no happy medium.  Undecided

Only 1/5 of the way done on your gifts?  Surprised  Oh, no!  I've tried in previous years to make all gifts, but it's too ambitious...finally had to give up.  Frown  Please do keep us informed of your progress...we'll root for you to finish...rah rah, you can do it!  Kiss

I found a book of ripple patterns for $1 at a garage sale. I'm not crazy about maybe half of the patterns, but this is one I do like.  I think I'll make a scarf out of this
