The endless mattress thingie and a Barbie dress

Here are two of my projects that are currently OTN:

A mattress thingie, using acrylic yarn.  Yes, the cheapest, roughest Red Heart acrylic.  I'm making this in squares (two strands held together on 10 1/2 needles) for a king size bed.  And it's taking forever.  It will ultimately be three layers thick, and the top layer will be using Caron Simply Soft (because it probably won't fit under a fitted sheet).  It also needs to be machine washable (one big reason for using acrylic).  I plan to take the layers apart and throw them into the washer separately, if necessary.  I also don't care about sweating on acrylic yarn.  Wool would be much too warm.

Another project is a Barbie dress, using JoAnn Sensations sock yarn.

Your endless mattress thingy boggles the mind.  I do hope we'll be seeing pictures. Cheesy

Charlene,

LOL, you may be sorry you asked!  ;-)  It's soooo tedious already, and I've only made one square!

I'm thinking of crocheting the rest with Tunisian Stockinette, to make it extra thick.  LOL, which means the finished square will have to be used for something else!

Which could be a good think.  It occurred to me that this process would be soooooooo much easier on a flat bed machine.

Charlene,

LOL, GMTA (Great Minds Think Alike)!  I have an Ultimate Sweater Machine and have been thinking of knitting it on there.  The machine is currently in need of repair first, though.  (LOL, there's always a catch!)  At the time it seemed easier to begin knitting by hand, sigh, but maybe it's better to wait until the machine is repaired.  Since it's straight stockinette, that would take very little time and require no tedious transferring of stitches.

Now that's usin yer noodle.  Way too much work for 2 needles unless you haven't anything else to do.  I started out on a USM.  I have the collection of videos downloaded to DVD for me by a very kind friend.  They are good no matter what machine you have.  Hope you get your USM up and running soon.  Otherwise your project sounds as if it might take a fair bit of time.

Charlene,

Thank you.  Smiley  Argh, the machine was damaged after it was flooded and left out to dry.  It was knocked down onto the floor and some pieces broke off, which can be repaired by using parts from an extension kit, which I do have.  The trouble has been in finding a more elegant solution than holding the new pieces on with duct tape.  The duct tape was recommended by the manufacturer, but I'd prefer something that will hold better over time.

Super Glue comes to mind.  It's too bad, I gave my USM away last year and wish now I hadn't.  The lady from the Freecycle I gave it to looked so disappointed when I met her to give it to her.  Would have loved to give it to someone it could have been useful to.

Charlene,

Wow...I have to ask...why do you think the woman from Freecycle was disappointed about the USM?  I think it was quite nice of you to give her such a wonderful item - they do retail for over $150!  (Perhaps she was expecting a more "professional" machine?  Even so, I think the USM is a darned nice machine!)

You're right, I do think she was expecting something more.  She told me about another freebee of a sewing machine.  Apparently the original owner thought it didn't work so gave it away on that basis.  The machine had a part that wasn't in right so there was nothing wrong with the machine.

I hope she took the time to learn to use the USM.  It's an excellent machine and you can make nearly anything you want to on it.  It's biggest plus is that you can extend it to as many needles as you want.  I've read on some lists about people who have actually made king sized blankets and afghans on those.
