User Question about getting "Invalid Image Format" error
February 21, 2014 at 12:50:13 PM
We received the following question through the
freePatternWizard
question tab:
Quote:
I am new to this site... I did get several pages for a design but I keep getting " sorry you sent an invalid image file type or size. check our allowed image types and upload size.... reenter new information below... I have done the same thing as my first one.... what am I doing wrong
As I mentioned in the FAQs area, there can be several
reasone
for this.
Possible reason 1 is that you sent the
patternWizard
a .
png
, .
bmp
, .
tif
, .
psd
, .
svg
, .
pcx
, or .
wbmp
and you're not a logged-in member. Until you log in, you can only use .
gif
or .
jpg
images. Once logged in, you can use .
gif
, .
jpg
, .
png
, .
bmp
, .
tif
, .
psd
, .
svg
, .
pcx
, or .
wbmp
images.
Possible reason 2 is that your image contains invalid formatting codes. This can simply be because your particular graphics program that generated the image saves in a non-standard format.
Possible reason 3 is that your image is in a slightly different format of a particular image type. For example, there are 6 different formats of .
tif
images. I try to update the
freePatternWizard
as I find an image that uses an unsupported format. Since additional alternate formats of image types
are being
created once in awhile, it sometimes boils down to the simple fact that I have not tested all possible variances. BUT, I generally can add support as I find a format-related issue so I always ask people if they'll email a copy of an image with which they're having a problem. Note that saving your image here in the community will not help since the Community
reformats
the image and we lose the incompatibility. So normally someone should post a problem here in the Community and I'll send them an email to which they can reply and attach the troubled image. The more I can address the unsupported image formats, the fewer "invalid image" errors the program will generate. So, over time, it should be pretty trouble-free.
Possible reason 4 could, in rare cases, be due to malicious code embedded in an image. This will not generally happen when you generate the image yourself with a graphics program, but can happen if you download an image from somewhere else. I can tell you that the
freePatternWizard
does try to catch such image files and give an error.
So if you have an image that the
freePatternWizard
is complaining about, let me know through the Community and we'll try to work together to solve it. And again, as I update the
patternWizard
to support a particular variance of an image format, it will help everyone in the future.

I have tried many times tonight to load pictures. I have tried different pictures. I have edited the pictures. I have switched them from jpg, bmp and a couple others. It is really important for me to get this graph made. I have never done a graphghan. My dad died last April and I want to make a large graphghan of him for my mom.

I've alerted Terry (Support) to your message. Just to be clear, are you getting the "invalid image" error message, or is it a different one?
In the meantime, I have a suggestion. Since you've never done a graphghan, I would strongly suggest trying a very small graphghan. A small one for practice, perhaps a pillow or chair cushion, something that won't take a long time and will give you a feel for working a graphghan. It's certainly not a requirement, but for all of the years I've knitted and crocheted, I still find trying a smaller piece will give a better idea of what the project will be like on a larger scale. I did neglect to do this fairly recently when learning bead crochet, and I was sorry...I couldn't manage the yarn and the beads, but when I stopped trying regular bead crocheted pieces and instead made several practice pieces with pony beads, everything fell into place and I was able to work "regular" bead crochet thereafter.

Hi, bradshellyhunter.
If you'd be willing, I can send you an email to which you could reply and attach one image that's having a problem.
I'm always looking for things that don't work. If I can make it fail, I can fix the problem. There are various formats of some of the images. Probably 6 different variations of .jpg image for example.
So let me know and I'll send you an email.

Sherall,
Welcome!
Let's see if it's possible to solve this quickly.
First of all, when you try to send your image, are you logged in? This is important, because if you're not logged in, you would be limiting yourself to only two file formats, and if you're using something other than those two, you'll get an error, even if we do support them when you're looged in.
Second, when you look the name at your image file, what are the last three letters after the dot? In other words, is it .jpg, .png, .doc, .pdf or something else? If your image is in an unsupported format, that can easily cause it not to work, and that's probably the most common possibility.
There are other possibilities, but let's start with the two most common ones.

Tinytums,
Welcome!
We go by file size, rather than image size. The limit is a 5M image file.
