Sharpness - smoothness?
September 29, 2022 at 7:30:24 PM
Hi,
Please explain what the sharpness vs smoothness slide does. I am making graphs for Tunisian crochet and crochet from photos and also clip art.
Thank you,
Carol

Hi, Carol,
This enhancement is most apparent on the edges of lines in an image. Here's an example:
Original Image
Sharpest (-15)
Smoothest (+15)
I ran the program with the original image above. Then I set the "smoothness" setting to the sharpest setting (-15). You can see it sharpened lines. This can also sometimes introduce some stray pixels. Then I set is at its smoothest setting (+15). You can see it in effect did some blurring or smoothing of lines. In this small example it's a bit hard to see that the pattern generated with the "smoothest" setting is different than the original image but it is. It will be more apparent if you try it with your own image. It's actually similar to the blur function but there are differences in how it mathematically does its work.
I usually tell people to try adjusting the smoothness and blur settings to see if it helps you get the result you want. I also suggest trying the "antialias" feature as this also enhances edges of images.
Hope this helps.
Terry
