Square photo but rectangle pattern
November 14, 2016 at 7:39:06 AM
Hi, I uploaded a square photo of my dog as I want to make a square cushion. The pattern is 100 stitches wide and 134 rows, but this is for crochet. Will it crochet as a square it seems to me to be a rectangle? Please can anyone help, I'm a newbie and want to make this for Christmas for the much beloved, thanks

Hi, my guess is that it will come out square. Sc stitches are not square, they are shorter so if your graph had come out 100 stiches by 100 rows it would be a rectangle lengthwise.
Hope this helps

Many thanks
I think what threw me was I was wondering whether to knit the cushion cover so I did the wizard again ticking the knit button and it was exactly the same. If I were to knit the cushion cover instead of crochet what knit stitch is used please?
Thanks again

What you really must do is make a gauge swatch. Without knowing how many stitches and rows per inch you'll have in your finished pattern, it's impossible to tell if it's going to be square or rectangular. Everyone hates swatching, but it's necessary.
For knitting you'd use regular stockinette stitch.
You'd still need to do a gauge swatch, whether you knit or crochet.
Once you swatch, if you find that neither one will turn out square, you may need to manipulate your image before turning it into a pattern. While we do have a feature in development at this time to allow you to set a length as well as a width, we originally only allowed the one dimension because we were concerned people would make images that would be too elongated or too wide in order to get it to a certain number of stitches/rows.
If you're using Windows and don't have a graphics program, I can suggest two very powerful ones, though I can't tell you how to use them...I'm still using one from 1998!

Many thanks
I'd love to crochet it but I'm gonna knit it, my gauge with knitting is always spot on whatever I do I'm chuffed to say. I must be the only person to enjoy gauge squares, it helps me get used to the yarns as I knit with so many of them.
I haven't been crocheting long enough to be confident enough to finish this to my standards by Christmas and it's for the much beloved's main pressie.
My sc gauge square isn't square it's too high so sack that one off for now
Thanks again for all your help and I love stitchboard the
Ps I use Adobe Photoshop 7 on a PC with Windows 98 on it that's not connected to the Internet 😃 It's the best program ever

You're very welcome!
Wow, how cool that you like swatching! Wish I did, LOL.
If you're more comfortable knitting, then I'd say that's the way to go. It will probably make for a much more enjoyable project, too!
It definitely sounds like knitting will be better for this project, also for gauge and for sizing, as well as your level of enjoyment.
Awwww, we're so glad you like our site!
Oh, yes, Photoshop 7! The last remnants of the major standalone non-app programs.
There's something to be said for the old way of doing things. It's become a compartmentalized, app-driven world, and sometimes it's nice to go back to the old ways. It's why I really like Paint Shop Pro, circa 1998. It's like wearing a comfortable pair of old jeans!
