If you're asking specifically about a crochet word pattern, the word patterns are written so that you'll follow the first row on the bottom from right to left, then you'll turn your work for the next row and use the same procedure of following the pattern as written (not backwards), working on the opposite side as you normally do, even though that way you're working in reverse.

For instance, let's say you have a few rows of stripes of purple and yellow.  The first row would be kind of like this: purple (50), yellow (50).  The next row would pick up where you left off, so you'd turn and then do yellow (50), purple (50).  That's because the patterns are written in the correct working order, so you don't have to reverse the pattern.  The only time you'll have to reverse certain rows in patterns is if you're working from a graph, as a graph should look a lot like your finished item.
