Yes, you're correct...a word chart does read like a crochet pattern with the colors.    For instance, if I had a pattern of 100 stitches with a big swath of red on one side and an equal swath of blue on the other, the first row would read, "Red 50, blue 50," and then on the following row, it would read, "Blue 50, red 50."  So you're also correct that the turn is counted for (though it doesn't actually say turn, as it's assumed you already know how to crochet).

To reiterate, we do not give you a word document; rather, your PDF document contains your pattern in words.  That's because some people prefer to read words instead of a graph.
