Hi Terry and Melanie,
On further reflection, I would also love to be able to edit the pdf. download a bit.
Like to add written instructions to the document, or change color names, stuff like that.

Don't know if that would be possible, or cause too many headaches.

Sherry,

Thanks...that's a great suggestion!  Smile  Terry is the last word as to whether or not that can be done.  Smile

Hi, Sherry.

Technically, since the PatternWizard generates the .pdfs from scratch, there's no limit to what it can do using text and graphics.

Quote:

The editing will normally be done in a separate area of the PatternWizard before generating the .pdf.  I will be adding editing features, like rotation, manually adding/deleting stitches, automatic enhancing, changing colors, and more.  There will also be a better way of previewing the pattern before generating it.

The adding written instructions might or might not be part of a "premium" version, which allows things like storing logos, company information, other text, and more.  We're still deciding even if there will be a premium version, but I'm thinking there will be once we add a lot of the enhanced features in the free version.  Even if we do offer a premium version in the future, the free version will always be available and we won't strip things out.  And the premium version would have features that more serious users would use as they want to sell patterns.

Sorry I'm being vague but I'm keeping quiet about specifics of upcoming features until they're actually available.

So, as always, I ask everyone to keep "giving me headaches" (although I've actually never had a headache in my life) and tell me what you'd like to see in the PatternWizard.

Thanks!

Terry

Thank you Terry,
I work a lot with beginners, so I think about creating patterns that would be fairly easy for them to follow while picking up new skills. Having the ability to add things like written instructions and instructional images would be amazing.

Sherry,

Ok.  So here's a question regarding adding instructions.

If I were to add an "add instructions" option, how would you like it to work?  I'm thinking I could offer a file upload option (like the image upload) to allow you to choose a preformatted text file on your computer to be built into the final pattern.

I could also have some sort of text area that could pop up if desired, that would allow you to either paste formatted text the box, or actually type in instructions or other text.

Or I could do both.

These are a couple of ideas.  Let me know how you might like it to work or if you have other ideas.

I'm kind of nervous about allowing uploaded preformatted text files since it would have to read a zillion different formats... like if you're using an Apple, PC, etc.  Or I could limit it to Word .doc, .rtf, or .txt.

Let me know your ideas.

Thanks.  Terry

Hi Terry,
I get what your saying about uploading different formats, I use Open Office and I don't even know what the format is on it.
I was thinking more on it yesterday and realized that I would probably have to print the graph, and write the instructions as I worked it out, then go back and paste the text into the doc.
I don't know for sure, but it seems what would be easiest is to have the add text option available on the download, but allow for editing it afterwards.
That way we can go in later and add the instructions

Terry,
I suppose another option would be the ability to save the unfinished doc. on your server and go back later to paste in the rest.
Then again that may take up too much space on your server.

Sherry,

No, we pretty much have unlimited space so that's not a problem.  We'll continue to expand the servers as needed.  (Several months ago we brought all the image storage in-house so we no longer rely on outside image storing services.)

Part of what we were thinking was to allow certain accounts to have a way of storing information, such as logos, finished patterns, images, favorite settings, palettes, and a lot more.  We haven't even considered starting to offer these until I get the program cleaned up and several new key features enabled.

I'm kind of assuming (hoping) you might be willing to try out new PatternWizard functions before I actually make them available in the program.

So what you're talking about fits into something we do have planned.

Sherry,

Ok.  I'll keep that in mind.  I've been updating the existing version a lot recently but haven't added any new features yet.

Currently I'm considering re-writing some of the existing code to fix some problems, re-enable some disabled features, and start with a clean, fresh program before adding new, enhanced features.

Even though we're probably the fastest online pattern generator out there, my re-write will make it even faster.

Fortunately I have a log to examine any issues with the program as people use it.  I've always said this is a preliminary version so there are definitely things that need to be corrected.

So as I start re-writing, I'll give you an additional item in your "Patterns" drop-down menu that will take you to the PatternWizard test version.  Again, I'll probably do the re-write before beginning to add the new features.  Once we bring up the new Stitchboard area (hopefully this month), I'll start with the re-write of Pattern Wizard.

Thank you Terry,
I know I downloaded a free trial version of some pattern software that didn't have what I was looking for, the color graphs from your pattern wizard look amazing.
