Hi!  Smiley  So glad you asked!

We don't give recommended hook sizes, because the graphs are what you're creating for your specific projects.  In other words, let's say you've made a graph with the Free Pattern Wizard that you intend to use for an afghan.  You would already know the yarn you're using and would choose a hook accordingly, and hopefully you've done a gauge swatch to decide how many stitches you'll need for your project.  Then you would enter the number of stitches across that you'll need in the Free Pattern Wizard.  (You can't enter the number of rows you'd like, because to do so would likely distort your pattern if the Free Pattern Wizard were to adjust it for a certain number of rows.  The Free Pattern Wizard adjust the finished pattern to your desired size horizontally, by number of stitches, and will adjust the number of rows proportionally so your pattern doesn't get distorted.)

Long story short, the Free Pattern Wizard is for creating graphs only from your photographs or artwork, to use as you please.  Smiley  So the yarns and hook sizes you use are entirely up to you.  Smiley

I'm trying to print off a few patterns for crochet projects, but when I print them off, it's not on 1 page. I sent a message earlier this week, asking the same question...but I haven't heard from anyone yet! Getting back to printing off the patterns, what am I doing wrong?

Cindy,

Hi, was your message posted here or...?  Are your patterns printing incorrectly, or are they split into more than one page?  We're glad to help you resolve any issues!  Smiley

Hi Melanie,

My patterns are printing off correctly, but are being split onto seperate pages. Ideally, I would like it all on 1 page. As for my previously sent message, I sent it through the "contact us" option in the "other" tab! Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated!

Cindy,

First, I'm wondering if you're talking about printing a pattern generated on the screen or from a .pdf?

Recently someone else had problems and questions regarding printing a pattern created on the screen.  I finally made a change to disable the "Print" button on screen-generated patterns if the pattern would not fit onto a single page due to differences in browsers and platforms (desktop/laptop, Android, iPhone, etc.)

As the PatternWizard is a continually evolving program, I'm always looking for input and suggestions.  That's why I'd like your input.

If you're creating a pattern on the screen and would like to print it onto a single page, that's definitely something that can be done.  (A couple weeks ago I tested exactly that.)  The reason I decided to simply disable the "Print" button on patterns that would not fit on a single page is that the larger the pattern, the smaller it printed.  I gave it a pattern slightly larger than would normally fit and it reduced it slightly.  In this case, it was usable.  Then I sent it a pattern with 150 stitches across.  It did a proper reduction in size to be sure it did fit on a single sheet, but the resulting printout was virtually unreadable since the individual stitches were so small.

Again, since I'm always looking for input, I ask you if this is what you're trying to accomplish... no matter how small the resulting pattern, always allow it to print onto a single page.

One other note: If I were to implement an "always allow screen printing onto a single page", we would often run into another issue, which would not be solvable.  Due to the inheritant characteristic of reducing graphic images, the resulting pattern might have distortion introduced since it would be dropping pixels to keep the pattern proportional.  This might introduce what's called "moiré interference", meaning there may be "interference lines" or non-existent lines on the printout.  This is the reason I didn't leave the "force onto a single page" function in there.

For example, here is a pattern with moiré interference:

So please let me know what you're trying to do and if you're talking about a screen-generated or .pdf pattern.

Terry

Terry,

I'm trying to create and print a pattern from the screen. When I first became a member and was toying around with the patterns, I was selecting the maximum number of stitches. Now(today), I selected the option to have the number of stitches matched to my chosen pattern.
When I veiw my pattern, it looks amazing, but it's still not going to print on 1 page. I also tried creating the same pattern in pdf format....but I'd rather not have a 20 page pattern! LOL

Cindy,

Out of curiosity, how many stitches across are you using?  And do you happen to know the original image dimensions in pixels?

Here's my thought.  Maybe I'll always allow a "Print This Pattern" button.  Then if someone clicks on the button and the pattern must be reduced to fit it on a single page, it'll pop up a warning that the reduced printed pattern may be unreadable.  It will then allow you to cancel the print or go ahead.

So like I said in my previous message, if there is only a slight reduction necessary, it would probably print fine, but at least it would allow you to print.

I know if I don't put in the pop-up warning and someone prints a huge pattern onto a single page, I'll get yelled at for the printout not being readable so I'd better address it sooner that later.  I get enough people yelling at me! Smile

If something like this sounds good for you, let me know and I'll put it in.

Terry

Terry,

The pixels from the original picture are 304 wide and 301 high. Like I mentioned in my last message, I've clicked on the option to match the stitches to the pixels from the picture.

I think the idea of having the "print this pattern" button is a great idea. It would still give others the opportunity to print on several pages or print on one page and no one could yell at you cause it was their choice! Wink LOL Thanks for your help Terry!

Cindy,

Ok, give it a try.

Now when creating screen patterns it will always allow printing.

If the pattern will not fit on a single printed page, it will warn you that the printed pattern may be somewhat distorted due to the reduction in size and give you a choice to print or not.  If you do wish to print, it will then reduce the size of the final pattern so it will fit on a single printed page.

As I mentioned before, a slight reduction in size will look much better on a printout than a pattern that needs to be reduced a lot.

Again, the reason it doesn't print to multiple pages (when creating a screen pattern) is that there are no standards between browsers and platforms (desktop, mobile, etc.)

FYI: I didn't make any changes to the way it handles creating and printing of .pdf patterns.

Terry,

Sorry it took me a few days to get back to you! Undecided  I went and had a look at the changes you made for printing the screen patterns and I'm happy to say that I think this will work!
I appreciate all the help that you have you done! Laughing

I've been playing around with making a pattern in the wizard and I'm starting my first project. I chose to download the pdf and print from that to see if I could play with the page set up.
I'm working a crochet pattern and set it to 100 stitches.
What I was trying to accomplish was changing it to landscape view and decreasing the margin size in the hopes that my stitches across would print on fewer pages, no go.
I can certainly work from it the way it is, but I'm thinking that it would be difficult if I ever wanted to sell one of my patterns. So my question is about whether it's possible to make changes like that in the pdf?

Hi.

Ok, keep in mind that I'm not a stitcher so I'm trying to understand your question.

Let me ask you a question.  If I added a "Rotate" option where you could have it spit out (that's technical talk Laughing) a pdf pattern rotated 90°, would that solve your problem?  And if so, at least for now until I would add the "Rotate" option, you could rotate your image in a graphics program and use that to create a pattern.

Again, I'm not sure if the rotation would help.

If I remember, I put in fixed margin sizes so if you have a couple extra rows, it shows on a new page, even though it would physically fit on the previous page.  I know I was going to make it a bit smarter and allow smaller margins if it was within a few rows but I don't remember if I did that or not.

Also, technically I COULD add the ability to adjust margins a bit and maybe that would also be of interest.  I'm constantly trying to collect more ideas that I can implement in future versions so I appreciate any and all questions and suggestions.

Hi Terry,
Yes I tried rotating it, that just turned it sideways without changing anything else.
I haven't tried copying it to another program for editing.

The pattern prints only 30 stitches across, which is probably plenty for a small project or making little squares to stitch together.

I think that having the ability to adjust margins and set it up in landscape instead of portrait would reduce it to 2 pages instead of 3 or 4.

Sherry,

Ok.  I'll take a look and see if this would be something easy and fast to implement.  Please give me a couple days and I'll get back to you.
