This site makes me so excited! I used Google to find a site that creates cross stitch designs and this popped up. I tested it with a picture I wanted a design for and was really impressed with the results. I am a big geek and am looking for a way to create designs for my variety of interests, such as characters from my video games and zombies. I'm 30 years old and from Minnesota in case any of my fellow stitchers are in my state.
1. Any recommendations of programs to create a cross stitch design from scratch?
2. After the cross stitch design is created, how can you tell how big the design will be in order to cut the correct size of cloth out?

Becky,
Welcome!
So glad you found us!
To answer your questions:
1) If you're looking for a sort of "paint" program to design cross stitch patterns, I know there are several available, but I would be remiss in recommending one over another as I have no experience with them, I'm sorry to say.
2) In your finished pattern, under "Size(s)," it will show the sizes of the finished item in 14, 16 and 18 count. In order to determine how large your cloth should be cut, you should add about 3 inches on each side to that measurement, or 6 inches for the horizontal and 6 inches for the vertical measurement. That will give you enough extra fabric for framing.

Beloved (what a great name!),
Welcome!
Are you looking for ready-made patterns, or are you looking to make your own?
If you're looking for free patterns, my suggestion is to Google something that's of interest to you, along with the words "cross stitch" and "free." There's no one great source of free patterns...the one I used to use is no longer updated, hasn't been for years, and the majority of the links don't bring up anything close to patterns.
That said, I've searched for free patterns recently, and there are still plenty available.
It may take a little bit to find certain things, but they can be found!
A source that isn't free, though is usually pretty nice, is if you can look at some cross stitch magazines. Since I first started cross stitching, the cross stitch magazine field has exploded! There are all kinds of magazines with terrific patterns. There are many long-term projects, or you can use them for quick projects, too. Not having a lot of time, I used to love the smaller projects! It's not instant gratification (LOL, what part of cross stitch ever is?), but it's pretty close.
