One you download the written pattern is row one the 'right side'. I am always confused on this one! The pattern I downloaded has words in it at the top so I don't want to start it and be wrong!

Welcome!
If you're working from a word chart, it's written so that you'll start your first single crochet row normally, from right to left, then you'll reverse, so your second row goes left to right (though it will look to you as if you're still working right to left, since you're technically working backwards on the second row). So row one would be your right side.
