Working with Nymo

Anyone planning to bead with Nymo should know this before they work with it: it tends to stretch.  If you're going to make a beaded item where any stretch to the thread would look odd, it's best to stretch the Nymo before stitching.  I've heard of people hanging Nymo from heavy metal pulls (I forget what they're used for) over the course of several hours before stitching with it.

When I first started beading, I made a simple strung/braided bracelet with Nymo, and was dismayed at how bad it looked after a few wearings, because the Nymo had stretched terribly.  Had I known it would stretch, I would have stretched it before making the bracelet!

I have been beading and teaching for many years. I have for a long time stretched my thread for 2 reasons. One, to help pull out some of the stretch and two to help to take the curl out of the thread (which helps it not tangle up so easily). As soon I cut the thread and before putting a needle on, I wrap one end around my finder of one hand and grab the thread part way through with the other hand (depending on how long the thread is) and pull very firmly. Then repeat for the other end. Hope this helps.

Carol,

Thank you...that's very helpful and sounds like an excellent way to stretch it.  And you're right, Nymo tangles so easily when it curls!  I did read about someone who said they actually hang their Nymo with a weight on the end for several hours, but that wouldn't work for me...when I want to start a project, I want to start it!
