Kathy,

Hee hee, I wouldn't use the word crazy!  Creative!  You're creative...more so than most people!

Your work can be a fine example for others, to show them what AMAZING things can be done!  Smiley  And most of them will drool in envy.  And who knows, you may inspire a whole bunch of beaders to do the same.  Smiley

Hi Melanie
Have you had an opportunity to hook up with your friend again about the framing questions?
Look forward to what she thinks

HAPPY NEW YEAR
We just got back home from Christmas with both families at 1:00 a.m. this morning and enough time to do laundry, repack and off we go again to spend New Years with friends that live 7 hours away. Will be a fun time.

Kathy,

Sounds like you have some wonderful plans...enjoy!  Smiley

I haven't managed to speak to my friend at all, but this is probably about the WORST time to try to talk to her, as she's really busy with her family during the holidays.  I'm guessing I won't reach her until after the holidays are over.

Have a lovely time with your friends...what a terrific idea to get together with them to celebrate!

Have a very Happy New Year!  Smiley

Hi Melanie
Long time no hear. LOL!
I've got my project started for the 2nd time! in January - first time tension not good not good at all.
2nd time I feel good about tension. Now to seriously get focused on my huge project - will have to bead everyday for sure row by row to get this gem done.
Just got back from 2 weeks in Mexico - got to do laundry, laundry, laundry, laundry, pay bills, etc. etc. etc., get all my tasks/chores done and a beading I will go for many months. LOL!

Have you had an opportunity to chat to your framing friend again in regards to my questions.

Kathy

Kathy,

Congrats on starting and glad you were able to get a good tension!  It's a difficult thing, particularly with peyote...I find I have to use a needle puller at times just to get it tight enough.  Seriously!  Who knew the requirement for peyote would be muscles of steel?!  Grin

Ooh, two weeks in Mexico...sounds heavenly!  Smiley  (Argh, the rest doesn't...that's the worst part about vacation...coming home to all of the chores!)

I haven't reached my friend yet, but we had a recent post where someone mentioned doing large beaded tapestries!  I've asked some questions both for your benefit and so I can learn, too.  Smiley  For all I know, she doesn't frame them at all, in which case, I'd like to know how she keeps the top beads/threads from holding ALL of the rest of the project!

Meanwhile, if you have the time, I hope you'll blog about your experiences here.  Smiley  I would love the opportunity to learn about a large project like this, as you have me SERIOUSLY thinking of trying this myself sometime - I have a kitty photograph that really NEEDS to be made up as a bead pattern.  Smiley  Maybe if I see how it goes, I can conquer my fears, LOL!  Grin

YOU will do fine on this endeavor~!

My first big tapestry was a piece I done for Sig Wynne-Evans.  I wound up doing THREE for her!

one first tip....learned the hard way.
Do not put out more beads than you are willing to pick up in case of beading accident.

I don't know the grocery area around you.  But, here at my fave store, I can get eggs in
2 1/2 dozen tray.  It has a really cool, not-too-heavy, but, sturdy clear plastic "tray" over the eggs
to help protect them in shipping.

30 little bead cups~!  I get small labels, write either my bead color number or symbol (depending
on how I am reading a pattern), put them in individual cups that will hold my colors of beads.

another neat thing....another tray will nestle right on top for a "lid" of sorts when not doing that
project.  Just be extra careful when taking off as static may cause a few beads to stick to the
bottom of the lid-tray.

I loooove my starter strip. I, as well, go 5-8 rows before removing from the starter.  Helps set
my tension.  Each one has their fave way.  You will work out your way that fits.

Be sure to take BREAKS~!!!!  Stretch your arms, neck, shoulders.  I like to "zone-bead" with my
fave music.  Depending on length of cd....either after xx amount of songs or entire cd,....I get up from my
desk, walk around the house.  stretch.

Yes, there are serious side effects to beading if you don't watch yourself.  NO JOKE.  So,stretch those legs
as well.  ;-)

Dawn,

Thank you for posting ALL of those helpful hints!

Wow, Sig Wynne-Evans is one of my FAVORITE bead artists!  (Okay, so I have a LOT of favorite bead artists!)  Her work is amazing...her tapestries are incredible!

That's SUCH good advice about picking up beads.  One of my first "larger" (not very large, but I was a beginner at the time and it was definitely larger than anything I'd done before!) pieces had two colors of beads that were SO close, when I dropped them, AAACCCKKK! I couldn't tell the two colors apart!  Luckily, I hadn't emptied ALL of the beads into the containers I was using, but I lost enough that I couldn't tell apart.  Sad

Those egg trays sound pretty neat!  Do you have any pics of them?  They don't sound familiar...I'm guessing they don't sell them around here...but maybe others will be lucky enough to find them in their area! Smiley

NO JOKE about stretching is a VERY good point!  Repetitive stress injuries from beading or problems from not stretching in general are SERIOUS.  You particularly don't want to jeopardize your future as a beader just because you neglected to take a break!

I like to work while watching TV.  I try to actually work during shows I'm more interested in watching.  The reason is that I'm not working constantly.  Sometimes I'll be paying more attention to the show and my beadwork will be sitting in my lap.  LOL, it's resting, too!  Grin  Seriously, you're absolutely right to stress the importance of this, because without stretching, getting the kinks out, moving around, stretching your legs and giving your body a break could lead to terrible problems later on.  Thank you, thank you, thank you...I'm SO glad you mentioned this!  Smiley

Thanks again for all of the great helpful hints!  It's also nice to hear TRULY expert advice, as I've never personally worked on a really large project.  Smiley

Hi Dawn - thanks so much for those tips.
I live in Alberta, Canada and i'm not sure if they do have those or not but will certainly check out next time in grocery store.
Update on my HUGE peyote project:
I'm happy to say I have 138 rows completed as of today.
It was the 3rd start as well (had a heck of a time getting that tension happening right) LOL!
hey i'm one determined lady and i'm on a very serious mission.
Its looking good I think - you can really see my hubby's head and his face to just above his nose and my hair and veil is starting to show up.

ME AGAIN DAWN
that darn enter key gets me every time.
Is it not hard to get the beads out of containers when beading?
I'm using one of those beading pads - have my little piles of beads on that and they are wonderful to pick up the bead off the beading pad.
How do the containers work?
Thanks
Kathy

Kathy,

Oh, wow, is this your wedding pic?  What a lovely idea!  Smiley

138 rows...FANTASTIC!  Considering how large the piece is, that's no small feat and you should be VERY proud!  Smiley

I hope you'll upload some pics when you're finished, or even of your work in progress!  Smiley

Kathy,

WOW, over 100 pages!  AWESOME!  And the same for finishing 177 rows so far!  Smiley

Okay, to upload an image...if you're talking about here, there's a wide button in the second row of buttons that says, "Upload Image."  If you press that, it will open a small, narrow window with the words "tinypic" toward the top and the word "Upload" underneath it.  (I'm uploading an image of what that window looks like here.)

Below that, you'll see a blank line with a "Browse" button to the right of that.  When you click the browse button, it opens up a window looking at your files, and you can navigate to where your pictures are on your hard drive, then choose the file you want, press "Open" at the bottom of that window, then press the big green button marked "UPLOAD NOW!"

It will say, "Uploading...please wait," and then it will return with another window with the word "Success!" and a small, blurry screen shot of your image underneath (don't worry, it won't REALLY turn out like that!) and then it also will have a small window marked, "IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards:"

Below that is a small window with some code in it.  Just click on it once...it SHOULD automatically highlight it.  Copy that text while it's highlighted (Control + C is fine if you're on a PC), and then paste it (Control + V on a PC is fine) into your message in the place you want it to appear.  (I put mine up above, right after where I explained that I was going to place it there.)  So you can put pictures between paragraphs.

If you're talking about uploading them to the Photo Albums, that's a bit different...for that, go into "social" on the top menu, then choose "member photo albums," and when it brings you to the initial photo albums page, choose "Your Photo Albums" on the left, then "Create New Album," again on the left.  Smiley  BOTH procedures will become MUCH easier after the site renovation is complete, so my apologies in advance if you encounter any trouble now...because it sounds a LOT harder than it is!

Re: Hello Melanie - peyote Wedding Picture
July 25, 2012 at 12:23:27 PM  (in response to beadmaster message #12)

Hi Melanie - SURPRISE  - bet you thought I left the country and I forgot about you.  I thought I would post the picture of the completed project.

A huge thank you to Georgia Grisolia for charting our wedding photo for peyote.

Also a huge Thank you to Suzanne from Calgary for the rescue of bead # 1526 that I ran out of.

The completed picture of our wedding photo charted for peyote. Reason for project is we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary June 13th, 2012 and I did this project as a complete surprise for my Husband. Hardest thing to keep secret when you live with someone 24/7. I presented it to my Husband on July 14, 2012 Saturday in front of a host of family and friends. His reaction was his grin - he was surprised and thrilled.

376 beads wide x 604 rows in length
19" wide x 20 1/4" in length

113,552 beads - Japanese Delica Beads size 11

100 colors of beads

400 yards of fishing line (FIRELINE) 8 lb. test

Started: January 12, 2012 and Finished: July 10, 2012. Was very challenging to get done in time. In that time went on vacation for 2 weeks in Mexico and 11 days in Hawaii + severals days taking parents to various doc appointments + life and commitments etc. + not to mention running out of bead #1526 but Thank god for Suzanne who mailed it a.s.a.p. and the way I went.

91 pages of word chart

I kept track of my hours on this project: 448 hours

The weight of it - not sure - it was suggested to go to a hospital or a vet clinic as they will have a scale that will be able to weigh it - have to do that yet.

Here is the picture sorry it is blurry - i'm not sure how in the heck to get a better quality picture. It is very firm piece.

And I'm so open to suggestions and ideas of how to frame this piece. Not sure how to do this let alone find someone who actually knows how to frame a peyote project.

Kathy

Kathy,

WOW!  This is absolutely spectacularSmiley  And what a beautiful pic to put into beads!

And what a fantastic surprise for your husband...I'm sure he was totally astonished.  Smiley

I'm so glad you were able to get the color of bead you'd run out of.  Smiley

That was almost literally 12 months of work...and IMO, quite fast for such a large project!

Thank you so much for sharing all of that detailed info!

So how did you manage to hide all of this from your husband?  It certainly is difficult to work around someone when you live in the same household!

What amazing work!  You've got me seriously thinking of trying a large project!

Hi Melanie

I thought you would appreciate seeing the end result.  It was a huge huge huge learning curve all the way thru to say the least.  I learned alot - i still consider myself a 'NEWBIE' to the bead world believe you and me. LOL!

I went to the Vet's office today: WEIGHT IS: 1 pound and 3 1/2 ounces.  You sure know you are holding weight.

I highly encourage you to embark on doing a HUGE peyote project - its awesome.
