New member looking for info on Candamar design floss alternative
July 5, 2022 at 10:04:32 AM
Hi all,
I'm Priya and new to the forum. Though I'm not a regular cross stitcher, I love doing it and has often turned to it while going through tough times. I'm currently working on a candamar designs Thomas Kinkade kit titled Forest Chapel. I had bought it ten years back and had made a small start. Now a decade later I'm working on it again and I'm almost 80% done. I realized a floss named "pearl filament (#7282) is missing. I tried a floss converter to see if I could find an alternative in DMC. But this particular floss # came as unlisted. I tried the Candamar designs website which is not currently operrational and called a number I found listed for the company without any success.
Wanted to know if anyone has worked with this particular floss and if so what color it is? Can you suggest an alternative for the same?
Thanks!

Priya,
Welcome!
Have you checked out Kreinik?
https://kreinik.com/
I'm not sure how their products measure up to what you're actually looking for, but whenever I think of filament, Kreinik is the go-to.
This page has their blending filaments and there is a "pearl" filament on this list; it may even be the same filament that was supposed to be in the kit, since Kreinik has been around for decades:

Hope that helps!

Thank you! I had seen Kreinik mentioned as an alternative. Will definitely check it out. The thing is I have no idea what its supposed to look like, the original floss that is. Was hoping someone would be able to give me an idea.

Priya,
You're so welcome!
Blending filament is a very, very thin thread, a with sparkle to it. If you buy from Kreinik it will likely be supplied on a thin spool. The idea behind it is to give your project a sparkle, or perhaps a sparkle with a tint. Unless you go for the braid version, your project probably calls for a single ply of filament along with your normal two ply of floss (or whatever your project calls for).
It isn't easy to work with, but if you're just using it for a smaller group of stitches, it shouldn't be too vexing. (I used it on a huge project and ended up abandoning it for way too long because even though it looks gorgeous, it's definitely a royal pain. Someday I'll pick it up again, but maybe in smaller amounts of time before taking short breaks in between working on it.)
Long ago I saw a pattern made up with one strand of pearl blending filament and two strands of white floss, to create a snowy field. The effect was gorgeous. The snow sparkled the way real freshly fallen snow sparkles.
So as much of a pain it is, it definitely is worth the effort.
DMC used to (decades ago) have a spool of a sort-of blending filament (sold on a regular thread spool), but it doesn't sparkle like the Kreinik. IMO, the Kreinik is more suited to such a project because this is exactly what it's made for.
Hope that helps!
