Month Cupcakes Stitch-Along
April 12, 2020 at 2:36:16 PM

You may have seen my post in the community section about having a stitch-along. But I have found a free one! They are the Month Cupcakes from Cyberstitchers.com, which has a ton of other nice free patterns and resources. If you want to do them with me, you can find them here. I am very excited that StitchboardAdmin Melanie may be joining me!
I have already finished January and February. The cupcakes are supposed to have the month's name on the bottom (Jan, Feb, etc.), but I do not have enough time to stitch that. I will, however, leave space in case I decide to do it later. I also added a lot of fractional stitches to make the backstitching look smoother and more like a cupcake, but that is up to you if you want to do it. I plan to start on March tomorrow, once I finish a project with a deadline. The great thing about these cupcakes is that they only take me about two days of stitching each, so I can fit the in between my bigger projects. I will update this page as I go.
Here is my progress:

UPDATE: March Cupcake! I finished it last night and I already love it! March is my birthday month, so I made this one extra-special. Sorry that the picture is on it's side, I could not figure out how to get it right side up.

UPDATE: April Cupcake! I just finished it. Yes, that is supposed to be an Easter Egg at the top there. April is a very special month for me beacuse it has the birthdays of two of my three fishes! The cupcake was already yellow (like one of my fishes), but the Easter Egg was supposed to be pink and green. I kept the pink, but changed the green to DMC 334 (a nice blue) because the other fish is blue and pink. So now I have both April birthdays in one cupcake! Besides the diamond-shaped Easter Egg (in the pattern it was more round, I reallly messed it up) I love how April turned out.

Secoya,
Now, THIS I love and I'm going to have to steal your idea to just stitch the cupcakes! Kiss Love your fractional stitches, too, but I am allergic to them. Laughing LOL. You're absolutely BRILLIANT, because the month names are really superfluous to the project and the cupcakes should be the stars of the show! Kiss
How did you plot them out across your fabric so they'll all be even? These look SO amazing! Kiss

Thank you so much! I used to be allergic to fractional stitches, but one day I was backstitching over a project that had none whatsoever and it could not stand how it looked! So I decided to just add them in where I see fit. It does not always work, trust me, but I think it looks great on the cupcakes. But I totally understand, they will look great with just full stitches, too.
I did do about 20 minutes of math getting these straight, even though I was never that good at math. Smiley But I bought this tool that is a ruler-like gauge thing, and you can use it to tell what count your fabric is and there are numbers that tell you how many stitches every inch, that sort of thing. It is not 100% necessary because you can always just remember 14 count=14 stitches per inch, but it is really nice for charting designs on cloth and stuff like that.
I decided that I have enough for three rows of four cupcakes each, and I will display them all on one big pices of aida, maybe write 2020 somewhere if it seems right. As for spacing, I really just do it as I go along, I will probably copy the same amount between January and February, because I do like how that looks. Even though the cupcakes are slightly different heights, I try to keep all of the bottoms along the same line, even though I obviously did not do that here Smiley From now on they will be along the same bottom line.

Secoya,
I think the fractional stitches look great on the cupcakes, too. Kiss So I may un-allergic myself to it, but am hoping to like the way they look without it, just because of fear of my allergy. Wink
Oooh, I used to have that tool! Probably have it in with my boxed up cross stitch supplies, sigh.
I'll have to just count it out.
What size fabric are you using?
Obviously didn't do that here? LOL, not at all obvious! Had you not mentioned it, I wouldn't have known and even so, it's hardly noticeable when one does. Kiss It looks perfect! Kiss

Thank you so much! I am using a 14X18 inch piece of white 14 count aida. I think that the cupcakes might look better on a higher count, but this is what I had. I took the picture at a sort of angle, which if probably why you can not tell that they are not in line. Smiley I started March today, and will update with pictures once I get further along.
Also, a note for the January cupcake: I recomend doing the top snowflake in one strand, and the small sparkles on the liner with two strands.

Secoya,
You're so welcome! Kiss
Okay, because what I can hopefully get is a 15x18 piece of white 14 count aida. Nothing else is available. I agree, 18 count would be better.
The floss is another issue. I just don't know how I can get it. Michaels is closed altogether and we lost our JoAnn's a few years ago, which I know is doing curbside pickup...but no help there, since there's no longer a store. Ordering from DMC will likely be too delayed to work, which is why I was hoping to get it locally in the first place, not to mention the DMC prices are substantially higher than they are locally, even at the most expensive shop. So frustrating! Cry
I'm not giving up yet, just trying to figure something out. Smile

Gosh! There must be some online embroidery store open! Someone on Etsy or ebay, maybe? I buy most of my threads and fabric in vintage lots from ebay, I assume those would only take about a week to ship. Best of luck, sorry for that. Even if you can not join me, it will be nice to know that there is someone watching my progress. And you can always just do them all on a big piece of fabric, they do not have to be done stitch-along style.

Secoya,
True...but I'd like to join in. I've found a few sources, but most of them are super high priced. Frown I wish Michaels here were open for curbside. Basic standard size cloth I can get...who knew floss would be at such a premium at a time like this! It's just plain old cotton floss, fer cryin' out loud, not specialty silk threads! I guess this is the new way...everything that's hard to get now is priced at a premium, like toilet paper!
The way you've done the stitching is how I was going to work on a similar-sized piece of aida cloth. I was thinking the other nice way would be to put all of them side-by-side, starting with January and going through December, but I'm guessing that would have to be a specially cut piece of fabric and nope, not now for that.
Thank you for understanding. Kiss I haven't yet given up, am still looking, but unless I find something I'll be unable to work along with you until stores are open. Frown Meanwhile, though, I can live vicariously through you (maybe even precariously? Wink) and keep up with your progress. Which I'm thoroughly enjoying. Kiss LOL, in addition to being jealous. Wink Sheesh, who knew one should be prepared with needles, floss, yarn, beads and pretty much anything else for crafting?

Gosh! Well, keep trying, everything will work out, even if it sure does not feel like it right now. It would look nice side-by-side, but of course right now it is out of the question. I love to know that you are watching my progress, and you can always do it as soon as you get material. Thank you, and if you do ever start please post pictures!

I LOVE your March cupcake...it's absolutely divine! Kiss
I'll definitely post pictures once I can get floss. Kiss I'm still keeping my eyes open to find out if Michaels or somewhere in this area opens up. Though I'm actually not completley disheartened...yeah, I am because I can't join in Cry, but I'm glad the workers are being kept safe. The craft business really isn't essential to survival (well, for me it is, but that's another story Wink) and I don't think people should have to risk their lives so I can cross stitch.

Secoya,
April turned out divine! Kiss I don't think it matters one bit that it's not more of an egg shape...I think it's unique and wonderful. This is the kind of thing I do, make something my own, even if it's not "conventional." Besides, if you're making it for you, you have every right to do something that you like best! Kiss
Can I ask you for a big favor, though? If you edit the top message to add your picture, can you also create a new reply message, also with the new picture? If you only edit, nobody really knows you posted anything, but if you add a new message then the category will light up with a "NEW." And I want people to see your beautiful work every time! Kiss

I finished the May Cupcake a few days ago! Purple is my favorite color, and I think that this is one of my favorites so far.
