Newbie question
July 10, 2019 at 12:17:00 AM

Hi! I am making a tunisian crochet blanket. I want to cross stitch on the tunisian squares. Is that possible to do this with the design maker? Do I say it's crochet or cross stitch in the design maker? I have done cross stitch before but this will be the first time I try to cross stitch on anything but canvas. Any other help would be greatly appreciated.

Sk8erD,
Welcome! Smile
I'll ask Sherry, BetwixtTheStitch, what she specifically does, as she does a lot of amazing things with cross stitch on Tunisian! Kiss
IMO, as long as your stitches are square it shouldn't technically matter if you use the Tunisian option or cross stitch.

Hi Sk8erD,
I make all my designs for cross stitch on tunisian right here on the pattern wizard. I do it in the crochet option for a couple of reasons : 1. When using a 4 weight yarn, your stitches aren't square, they are slightly taller, so using the tunisian vertical option keeps the integrity of the image.
2. I can choose the yarn brand, and the colors will be within that brand. Yarn doesn't have as many colors as floss, so the cross stitch option would be completely overwhelming.
If you are using a 3 weight (DK) yarn, the stitches will be square so you'll want to choose the tunisian square option.
Hope that helps.

Will it still show you the appropriate stitches for cross stitch if I tell it to it in crochet? Do you have any tips? I am relatively new to cross stitch and this is the first thing I've done with crochet.

It will give you a color graph, so each box is an X stitch in the appropriate color. Don't try to do half crosses and the like, it doesn't work as well.
I actually have a lot of tips:
Add a few stitches on either side as your first and last stitch are useless.
I have done a picture tutorial on how to cross stitch on tunisian.
In this picture I show how to go into the stitches just under the vertical bars to hide your tails.
Place your needle just under those stitches, splitting the tail to lock it in place.
This shows exactly how to place your needle, by doing it this way the back will be clean. Like this, sometimes you'll go a bit too deep and have a tad show through, but nobody is perfect.
If you're more of a video person, one of my friends made a video after I taught her how, you can find it here:
