Number of Crochet Chains
July 29, 2017 at 9:47:35 PM

Hello! My name is Helen and I'm new to the Stitchboard community. I used the freePatternWizard to design my graphgan pattern (numbers and words) today. Totaly amazing! Now how many chains are needed to start my project of 150 wide x 125 high single crochet?  I want to make sure so that I don't start with the wrong number.  Many thanks.

Helen,

No worries, I answered this in the other topic...you're just going to treat this as any other standard single crochet pattern, if that's the stitch you chose (we call it Standard because in the UK it's called a double crochet - how is that for confusing? LOL). So you'd chain 151 to give yourself the one extra chain for turning to start your new row.

Thanks so much for the reply.  I thought as much but wanted to make sure.  Yes, UK's standard sounds confusing but you explain it clearly.  One more question, please.  So what size will my graphgan pattern of 150 wide x 125 high be, an afgahn single or double?  I will start the project today so I'll see I guess.  Many thanks from the a mile high!

Helen,

You're so welcome! Smile

Your stitch will be a single crochet...in the future, we'll offer double crochet, but we don't have that available at the moment.

If you want the finished dimensions of your graphghan, you'll need to make a swatch. For single crochet, do a single crochet swatch, at least 4 inches by 4 inches. When you make your swatch and block it, you'll measure to find how many stitches in your swatch, then will divide those dimensions by 4 to get the number of stitches per inch and row. So, for example, if you have a swatch that's 20 stitches by 24 rows, you'll divide both of those numbers by 4, which would give you 5 stitches by 6 rows per inch. Then you'd divide your number of stitches, in this case 30 inches by approximately 20.7 inches. Of course, you'll use your own swatch numbers, not my made up ones. But that gives you an idea of how to calculate your numbers. Smile

Please do keep us informed of your progress!
