If one is doing a beaded picture from an actual photo, is it better to have more or fewer colors. I'm more interested in how the finished product looks rather tan time involved

If you're not worried about time and the investment to bead from a photo, then the best thing is to use the full bead palette of Miyuki (seed beads if that's the way you're going, or Delica if you're looking for cylinder beads).  If cost and time are more important, we have the Stitchboard Basic Palette available.  This palette has light/medium/dark of most colors...the colors won't be as nice as using the full Delica or seed bead palette, but there will be a lot less of an investment, as bead colors can really add up with just a few to purchase.
