Illusion Knitting Graphs and Word Charts

This feature of the freePatternWizard is for this knitters who want to create an illusion knitting graph and/or word chart.

With illusion knitting, you knit a pattern of colors (usually two), where the combination of knits and purls makes an image of stripes when viewed normally.  The illusion is when you view the knitting at an angle, and a hidden picture appears!

This feature can be accessed by subscribing at our subscription page.  As an introductory price, you can pay a one-time $4.99 and create unlimited illusion knitting graphs and/or word charts for a whole year.

Here are a couple little clips from an illusion knitting pattern created by the freePatternWizard:

This is a bit of a word chart.  The MC is main color and CC is contrasting color.  The program can also be set to show colors as Color 1 and 2 or Color A and B.

Just a little piece of an illusion graph with a grid turned on.

Instructions are included on the key pages of the .pdf.  You have the option of creating a graph only, word chart only, or both.  If you create both, you wind up with two separate "booklets" in a single .pdf, each one having its own key page with customized instructions.

Thank you to Kim, member kmargittai for these fantastic pictures of the wonderful pieces you see here, made with the PatternWizard's illusion knitting premier feature!  The piece is entitled, "It All Adds Up."

The piece as viewed from above:

And now for the illusion:

Thank you, Kim!

Kim, member kmargittai, has graciously allowed us to give her pattern away for free here in the Community, so you can get an idea of how an illusion knitting chart works.  Smile

Please note that the PDF is a bit different in the beginning and near the middle of the pattern.  Kim ended up knitting only 4 rows at the beginning instead of 12 (I would do the same, as 12 rows aren't really necessary before starting the pattern) and again she changed the 12 rows between 61 and 80 to only 8 rows.  The extra rows aren't really needed, but if you want more knit rows at the beginning and between the 2 + 2 and the = 4, by all means, use the pattern exactly as charted.  The nice thing with the plain knit rows is that it's about how you want them to look, not critical to the illusion pattern, so there's no right or wrong way to do it!  Smile

Get the pattern here!
