Line,
It sounds like a plus, then, that Silver loves the water so much. Hee hee, I love your description of huskies needing a reason to go into the water!
I've heard of teaching cats to love the water (and baths) by giving them baths early on, when they're kittens. So it apparently works similarly for dogs...get them used to the water, make it something enjoyable, and they'll always love it. Unfortunately, it's too late for our girl, considering we've only known her as an adult (LOL, and we don't have a time machine to travel back and teach her to love the water).
I can understand Jamie's preference for the shower but not the ocean. It may be that she feels like the ocean is too overwhelming. Which is smart, because it really is overwhelming! But a shower is enclosed and controlled.
Are you saying that Jamie is teaching Silver some bad behavior?
If so, is it perhaps that she's trying to get her in trouble, teaching her the wrong things so she can get the attention back on herself, away from Silver?
I hope Jamie stops being so upset at Silver over the toys...if she doesn't play with them in the first place, it sounds quite like jealousy, unfortunately. Hopefully that will wear off!
Anyway, it sounds like it's only a matter of time...you undoubtedly know what you're doing.
I try to remember that change is always hard for us as humans, so it must be even more difficult for pets...and love and time are good for making change bearable.

Melanie,
Oh no, Jamie is not teaching Silver bad behavior.. Thank god.. :p
But she is teashing her how to behave.. Don't bite the kids.. Don't steal from tables.. Don'y pee inside.. :p
Jamie dos not have an ounce of bad behavior in her anymore..
I think that it is difficult for Jamie to get a little new one in the house, but she will get over it as soon as she has gotten used to it..
It won't take very long..

Line,
Oh, wow, I'm so glad Jamie is teaching Silver how to be well behaved!
So was Jamie badly behaved at first? If so, what did you do to correct her behavior?
I'm sure you're right...and there will probably come a time when Jamie won't think of any other way than having a little sister.
It takes anyone time to get accustomed to someone new in their life, adult humans included, so why would we expect a fur-child to adapt immediately?
And how exciting that you get to watch the relationship between the two progressing!
Hope you'll be taking plenty of pics...really enjoying the ones you've shared so far!

Melanie,
Jamie had never been an "inside" resident in a house.. She had spent most of her life in a dog yard, with nothing but her bowls of water and food, and a dog house.. No toys, no nothing..
So she has been a big challenge training wise..
She had a ton of bad habits when we got her.. She could not be home alone, she chewed her way through almost everything, including doors and funiture..
I have always, and will alway, correct my dogs with positive reinforcement.. I do not scold them if they do something wrong I actually ignore it, but when they do something right I will speak to them in my "happy light voice", and give them treats.. That way they will get their behaviour corrected without the negativity..
I am taking plenty of pictures.. If you want - you can follow me on my facebook account. My full name is Line Aabye, I should be the only one named that

Line,
Awww, so glad you took Jamie in...her previous experience sounds so awful!
I'm sure she appreciates being a member of your family now.
I know rescued cats feel that way...and I've heard rescued horses do, too! My neighbor was saying rescued horses will actually follow the person who rescued them around, just as a dog would follow!
Of course Jamie would have had bad habits...she couldn't have known what was right and wrong after living in such a different situation.
Love
your way of correcting bad dog behavior...with love and kindness!
Ooh, thanks...I'll send you a friend request at some point (I don't get on Facebook much, sorry to say).
I'd love to see your pics!

Melanie,
IMO it's the only way to correct a dog..
I do not want shy dogs, that almost crawl on the floor with their tails between their hind legs when I call them.. I want to see wagging tails = happy dogs..
That is why I really really hate this Cesar Milan dude.. o.O He abuse the dogs, and he steps so far over the line for acceptable dog training that he is not able to see the line anymore..
He kicks the dog if it pulls on the leash, he litteraly throw dogs who are affraid of water IN it..
I could keep on going.. I would like to kick his ass
.. No wait.. I would LOVE to kick his ass..
He really steps over the dogs boundaries.. :/
You are more than welcome to send me a request, I will of couse post pics here as well, but I put a LOT of pictures of the dogs up on my facebook so that their breeders can follow my work and progress with them.. Not so much Jamie's breeder, but Silver's breeder loves to follow her..

Line,
So agree with you...happy dogs are the way to go!
Pets should always be treated with kindness.
Ugh, I hadn't heard of Cesar Milan, but how
awful
!
I can't imagine fear is a great motivator for any pet.
And outright abuse?! That's horrible!
What he does really sounds very, very abusive, not to mention horribly wrong.
Thank you...and that's so nice how Silver's breeder wants to follow her progress.
Is that pretty rare?

Melanie,
Most breeders will say that they would like to follow the pups growth and so on.. By many of them will never follow up on it.. :/
There are even more breeders that see the puppies as a way to make money.. :/
That's why I always say they if you want to buy a dog, you will have to be extra carefull with the breeder..
The ones that does it for the money usually don't breed very good dogs..
I am lucky that my friend is one of the "good guys".. She really cares for her dogs, as you could also see in the pictures..

Line,
How sad that many breeders don't really care to follow up on the pups, despite saying they will.
Sigh, I'm sure you're right, that there are breeders who see breeding as a way to make money and not much else. You give sage advice about being extra careful when it comes to breeders. I sure can't imagine how someone who really doesn't care will somehow be a good breeder...if all that motivates them is the money, they can't be good at what they do, and the innocent pups will suffer.
Your friend is obviously top notch, which is wonderful!
Glad you have such a friend and she can in turn have the comfort of knowing her pup is being well trained and cared for.
That, to me, is worth much more than money.

Melanie,
Unfortunately breeding is easy money for a lot of people..
Puppy mills sometimes have 50 dogs or so, walking around in cages, never getting checked up on, and breeding on the females everytime they are in heat..
It's awfull
Anyhow - School is KILLING me..

Line,
I entirely agree...puppy mills are horrible.
Those poor dogs did
nothing
wrong. People who run puppy mills are scum!
I'm so sorry school is already getting bad.
Is it the schedule, the courses, the workload, something else...?
Sending good thoughts your way that things will get better soon.

Melanie,
Ugh... It's the subjects.. The workload is okay - but the teachers are a pain in the.....
It's really borring, and really just a waste of time.. :p
Some of the courses are really hard, like chemestry, and physics.. And math.. I hate math, it sucks..
At least I met a couple of sweet persons - even though I am not a person person :p

Line,
Ugh.
I'm sorry it's that way, because a good teacher can really make a boring subject interesting...but a lousy teacher can make an interesting subject boring!
So with you on math sucking! It's a necessary evil...even with crochet we use it, sigh. And chemistry and physics are hard, no doubt about it!
I'm glad you've met some nice people...hopefully that will make it a little easier to bear the unbearable?

We have a very fun friday afternoon together.. :p hahaha..
But all the other stuff.. I am taking Psychology on B level now - it is soooo borring, because I have been there last year, so I know about this stuff.. :p At least I can make a good discussion in class.. :p
But no time to crochet, I did that last year.
