New! Caron One Pound, Caron Simply Soft and Herrschners 2-Ply Afghan palettes - thank you to BetwixtTheStitch!
New! The Herrschner's Worsted Palette - thank you to BetwixtTheStitch!
New! We've just added the palette for Deborah Norville Everyday Yarn! If you knit and/or crochet, this is for you. This is a beautiful yarn with a nice feel to it, a good alternative in worsted weight acrylic! (Thank you again to BetwixtTheStitch!)
New! The Red Heart Super Saver Palette - thank you to BetwixtTheStitch!
Welcome to Stitchboard! Feel free to sit and stay awhile. Check out our new Premier features. In addition to the ability to create larger patterns (up to 500 stitches wide), illusion knitting and private labeling (no more worries about editing those pesky and messy PDFs), we've just introduced Filet Crochet, our most popular request! We have many more features planned, too!

I just tried to make my first pattern. I keep getting lots of errors. Is there someone that can help me.

Amandy,
Welcome!
We don't recommend using the "colors only" option when creating your pattern. We instead recommend using either "symbols only" or "both colors and symbols," which will help clarify which color is which. To do this, in option #7 you should choose "pattern in PDF format" and then under the "Pdf:" area, you can choose "symbols only" or "both colors and symbols." "Colors only" should only be used for the most basic of patterns with only a handful of colors. Of course you're right that the human eye can't tell which colors are which when you have a lot of different shades of, say, blue!
We do have beading word charts in our plans but at the moment this feature isn't available.
Sthon,
Yes, you're correct, you do need a starting chain. You could attempt to make your chain in different colors, but IMO, it's not necessary. I'd just use the dominant color. Your chain is such a small part of the project, and if you choose to add an edging later, such as a shell or plain single crochet border, then it's not going to matter, anyway (in which case I'd tend to use the planned border color for the chain). For this, I'd say it's more a matter of personal choice. If you're really persnickety, you could follow the color pattern, but for me, meh, too much trouble for not much result!
Also, not to confuse you, you could have a couple of rows of one color of single crochet both before and at the end of your afghan (and extra single crochets at the sides, as well), so it really is a matter of personal choice.
Row one is your first row of single crochet.

Welcome!
In this version
of the software, no, you can only specify the stitches across, not
the number of rows. The reason for that is originally we were
concerned people would skew or truncate their patterns, so we
didn't want them to have an issue and decided to let the Wizard
determine the rows/length of a pattern.
The
optimal thing to do is make your original image 110 pixels across,
so pixels = stitches. The number of rows is a more difficult thing
to determine, because crochet isn't square; the stitches are
rectangular, so the Wizard is looking more at the height the image
is, so rather than attempting to go pixels = rows, it needs to look
more at the aspect ratio of the image.
In a
future version you'll be able to specify, but even then, the
problem would be that it would likely mean designating a number
would give you a skewed image if you're trying to go from a square
image to a crochet pattern.
As it is now,
the best thing is to experiment to get it to the correct length.
You could add or subtract a blank border to get it to the correct
size. I'm not positive you could get it to exactly 110 pixels, but
you could likely get it close.

I am new to this.
I have subscribed to more stitches.
What do I need to do to begin using this feature? Still limiting me to 150.
Thanks!
Melanie
