New! Caron One Pound, Caron Simply Soft and Herrschners 2-Ply Afghan palettes - thank you to BetwixtTheStitch!
New! The Herrschner's Worsted Palette - thank you to BetwixtTheStitch!
New! We've just added the palette for Deborah Norville Everyday Yarn! If you knit and/or crochet, this is for you. This is a beautiful yarn with a nice feel to it, a good alternative in worsted weight acrylic! (Thank you again to BetwixtTheStitch!)
New! The Red Heart Super Saver Palette - thank you to BetwixtTheStitch!
Welcome to Stitchboard! Feel free to sit and stay awhile. Check out our new Premier features. In addition to the ability to create larger patterns (up to 500 stitches wide), illusion knitting and private labeling (no more worries about editing those pesky and messy PDFs), we've just introduced Filet Crochet, our most popular request! We have many more features planned, too!

I'm trying to make an 18x18 pillow and I'm unsure how many stitches to use. Anyone have any suggestions?
Is there a magic formula for conveting the stitch counts by color into how much yarn is needed? Thanks in advance!
Kelly
Chrissy,
Welcome!
I'm a righty, so I hope someone reading this can give you some pointers for lefties! Meanwhile, if you're using the freePatternWizard there's a setting for left-handed people in #7, "I am left-handed." So I hope that helps.
In general, if you want to know, say, finished measurements, you'll want to make a gauge swatch with your chosen hook and fiber. The gauge swatch is unique to you; everyone crochets with different tension, so there's no one size fits all!
I always try to recommend starting with a small project first. There are different trains of thought on this. My feeling is that by starting small, you'll get a taste for whether or not this is something you'll want to do on a larger project. But if you're one of those people who likes to just jump in, feel free!
I'm not sure what other questions you have, so please let me know what your questions are!
Can I add a picture to this thread? Although the progress is slow, I'm about 65 rows into my portrait project and would like to share it. Perhaps I can add a photo...... I'll try it.
Hello. I have used this website to make a couple of graphs to crochet blankets. The highest width on here is 150 stitches. Does anyone know how I can make a graph for a king size bed. Thanks in advance.
