Hi! I am new here but have done cross stitch before. I have been cleaning out stuff and discovered a project I started probably about 20 years ago, and it just never got traction because it was way too complex!

I am going to abandon that project, since I am now older and even with the extra magnification, well, it is just too hard, because the cloth is way too dense. I think it may be 24! What was I thinking - ah, the beauty of youth's exuberance! LOL...

So, I am working on pulling out the very small area I had started, and probably will freecycle the cloth to someone who can use it, and until I can get something more manageable, I did find some sheets of plastic canvas from the days when I was making tissue box holders and the like - remember those days? Like maybe 30 years ago or more?

So, my daughter's boyfriend has a saying I think makes a really funny family slogan, and I want to cross stitch it onto the plastic canvas for something fun to do, and I came here to use the design tool. So, that is why I joined and I am looking forward to being here!

I think that's an awesome idea with your daughter's boyfriend's saying as a family slogan!

(Do you care to say what it is? If not, that's fine!)

I can completely relate to working with too small materials. A lot of finished and half-finished items I've found over the years are things I couldn't possibly work with now. Smaller count fabrics practically make me break out in hives!

Anyway, the idea of using plastic canvas is wonderful.

It's big enough to see (isn't that a great qualification?) and it will be far easier to work on. If you don't mind slanting stitches (I'm sorry to say we have no representation of it at this time), you could even use a needlepoint stitch instead of a cross stitch.

What I would say about using the freePatternWizard so that it doesn't get frustrating is to find a clear, unfussy font. If you use something with thick and thin lines or serifs, the freePatternWizard likely won't give a pleasing result. I know block letters don't always look nice, but there are some fonts out there that are a little less blocky and still pretty solid.

The slogan is very simple - it is [our last name with an s] be [our last name with an s]. So, if our last name were Smith, it would be Smiths be Smiths. The background behind it is that he comments to her on things like, "oh, now I see where you get that behavior" when they visit and he spends time with me in particular. The apple definitely does not fall far from the tree... LOL...

I actually found the original package from the Aida cloth, and it is 22. So, yeah, definitely not going to use it! I waver between the plastic canvas and getting some Aida with a lower number. But, since I have the plastic canvas on hand, it might be the best to experiment with - heaven knows I have plenty of yarn, and of course, from the abandoned cross stitch project, lots of floss too!

I understand what you are saying with the font, and I think I have a font that is both special to our family and also fits the bill of what you suggest works best. I will et you know how it goes, for sure!

LOL, that's hilarious!

Can I borrow it to use on my husband?

I usually just resort to saying something like, "Okay, MARY," or "Okay, JOHN," when my husband acts like his mother or father (or I'll use my parents' names when he acts like mine...argh!) but I like the idea of saying, "Oh, now I see where you get that behavior, MARY!"

Ouch, 22 count Aida...I didn't even know that existed! The only thing I knew of with a count that high was congress cloth. But I've never seen it packaged, only available custom cut by stores.
