Sculptural (3D) beadwork

I'm a huge fan of sculptural beadwork...I have so many ideas for 3D items dancing in my mind!

For those of you who want to participate in an intensive discussion on this, I've created a Circle for this purpose.

I plan to work mostly in peyote stitch.  I've started a "practice" beaded box from Julia Pretl's "Little Bead Boxes" (see beginning attempt below) and am pleased with how well the peyote shapes itself.

Do you use a different technique, or do you prefer peyote, as well?  I'd love to hear about your experiences with peyote or other stitches for sculptural beadwork.  If other stitches work as well or better, I may try them!

I am a huge fan of sculptural beadwork too!  I'm not very good at peyote yet.  The only 3-D I've done so far is beaded flowers - roses, lilies, etc.  I've got Diane Fitzgerald's book, The Beaded Garden, and another book that I can't remember the name, but it's beaded flowers too.  I have some more, but can't think of them right now.  Oh, one is Julia Pretl's book, Little Beaded Boxes.

I look forward to learning more from this site!

Terri

Terri,

"The Beaded Garden" is an excellent book!  If you do think of the name of the other flower book, please let us know.  So many people love 3D beadwork...it has so much appeal!

"Little Bead Boxes" is one of my favorites.  I've been frantically searching for the square box I started, then put aside in, ahem, a "safe place."  Groan, now I can't find it.  After starting the hexagonal pink box from the pics, I reread the instructions and found it said the square box was the most difficult.  LOL, it was like a personal challenge...make the most difficult piece first, and then everything else will seem easy.

Do you have any photos of your flowers?  I'm sure they're gorgeous!

Melanie,

Please do post pictures so we can see your yellow submarine (anything to do with the song?) and any beaded beads you've made, as well!  Eye candy is always appreciated.  Smiley

Hi there!

Could the book be "The Beaders Floral," written by the two British authors?  I don't have the book in front of me and can't recall their names.  I really, really love my "Beaders Floral."

I also love to make beaded beads of all kinds, and have Diane Fitzgerald's "Shaped Beadwork."  I'm still somewhat of a beginner and haven't practiced a lot with the stitches.  I do love peyote, however.  Geometric shapes come fairly easy to me, probably because I have a technical mind more so than an artistic mind.  I do computer work for a living.

It will be great to learn from you all!

Penny,

I've never heard of "The Beader's Floral" - it looks like a fantastic book!  Please do tell us about it.

Isn't "Shaped Beadwork" a treasure?  (LOL, my copy is just about covered with drool...)  Geometric shapes are so much fun, and IMO, peyote lends itself very well to anything sculptural/shaped.

Hi!

"The Beader's Floral" is a FANTASTIC book!  It's written by Jill Devon and Liz Thornton and is mostly sold in the UK.  I'll have to try to remember where I got it..  It was from an online seller here in the US.  Here's a link to book information with some sample pages available:

http://www.beadmerchant.co.uk/product1442.html

There are many many many different kinds of flowers to make, plus some flower-centric projects, and a section on making things like stems, buds, pistils, stamens, etc.  I like this one much better than Diane Fitzgerald's "The Beaded Garden."  The DF book is an excellent book, but I like the layout of "The Beader's Floral" much better.  I can't say enough good about this book!  Here's a picture of the cover:

Penny,

Thank you for the link and the excellent information about the book!  It looks like such a good one, and I'm intrigued by what you said about the layout.  What's different about it?  The flowers on the cover are gorgeous!

Looks like one I've got to have!  Smiley

Here's some of my beaded beads:

These were made with Swarovski crystals and Delicas.

This uses the RAW stitch, and the materials are Swarovski crystals and hemimorphite stones beads.

But probably the best piece I've done in sculptural beadwork are freeform bracelets, one in peyote, and the other one in herringbone. The first one shown below is the peyote, and the second one is a freeform herringbone bracelet. The first one is part of my private collection, and the second one has been sold.

Gail, you design amazing pieces! Love the beaded beads! I have to say I have followed some of your work for a while now. I believe that I used your instructions for the first russian spiral I did. I may need to revisit that and make another! Smiley
What a wonderful display of your kumihimo on the previous thread as well.

Carmen:)
