Action hero knitting patterns for children
June 14, 2014 at 6:25:33 PM

I have grandchildren who ask for action hero jumpers. It is incredibly difficult to find pictures (let alone patterns) for these jumpers.  Thank heavens for Stitchboard!!  I have managed to get The Hulk's face converted for knitting (took ages to find a picture online) and have now converted Spiderman and Ironman's faces.  The problem seems to be finding pictures that don't have 30+ colours in the converted picture or if the colours are restricted are actually recognisable.

Does anyone know where to find decent pictures for conversion? Currently the pattern size would be for 28 inch chest - equal to 90 stitches so pattern would be 70 stitches wide.  The Hulk came out really well and my grandson loves it.

thanks for any help

Wow, it's great to hear our software helped you!  Smile

I completely understand about limiting colors.  Too few, and you can't tell what the pattern is.  Too many and it becomes cost prohibitive as well as impossible to find that many colors!

The only thing I can think of offhand is perhaps using more comic strip type images as opposed to photos, which is what I imagine you're using?  Comic strip drawings would tend to use fewer colors, unlike photos, which can have millions of colors.

Hope that helps!  Smile

Maybe an acceptable alternative to using faces you could use the superhero logos? I know it's not exactly what you're looking for but I've found that logos are easier to find/convert to a simple color scheme. I also personally prefer simpler logos and motifs, but that's just my personal preference. Good luck, and your grandchildren sound really lucky to have a grandparent who will go through this much trouble to make them handcrafted jumpers!

That's a fantastic idea, mdory!  Smile  Logos really are much easier to work with and they look sooooo good!  Smile

Also, if you have a pinterest account and search for "crochet graphs" some pretty cool superhero afghans come up. I saw a nice Spiderman design that had been simplified to 4 or 5 colors: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/217861700694410351/
It might at least serve as a starting point for some inspiration, even if a lot of crochet patterns on pinterest are shady people who want you to pay to use a pattern that they shouldn't legally be selling due to copyright anyways.

What a find...I'm not into Spiderman and think that's fantastic!  Kiss
