how to create a 14 count template
September 28, 2017 at 7:28:45 PM

Hi all, my name is Jodee, I am live in australia and i have just stumbled onto this site.

I have a huge question on making a 14 count transparent grid for a project i would love to do. the project is 40cm wide and 1metre long. My epson printer is not capable to print out a copy of the design due to its size and the detail would send it into a meltdown...

I have enquired in my town to see if they could print it onto aida cloth but was going to cost $400.... yeah not happening, So.. can anyone please guide me into making a transparent 14 count grid template that i can put over top of the original picture and happily recreate a massive masterpiece.

Please and Thankyou in advance

Jodee,

Welcome! Smile

I'm not sure I'm understanding your question correctly, so please let me know if this isn't what you mean. Are you saying that you want to print your pattern onto some clear material, such as transparency material, lay it over the fabric and work it from that transparency?

My concern would be that working from transparency material would necessitate picking up the transparency material, working a few stitches at a time, then placing the transparency material back onto the fabric to figure out where the next part starts - the next line, color, etc. Short of actually printing directly on the fabric, I can't see any way you'd be able to align it perfectly each time, especially with the nature of fabric being unpredictable and difficult to work with. One fold or wrinkle and your pattern would be way off.

Also, if your printer can't handle printing your pattern normally onto paper, I don't see how it would handle printing that much onto transparency material.

If your printer can't handle printing a grid to cover the size of fabric you're looking to use, can you go to a copy place and see if they have a service that would print such a grid, perhaps onto transparency material you provide for them?

And if you wouldn't have a way to consistently realign the Aida cloth and transparency material for every few stitches, maybe working your pattern in smaller portions from paper as a normal counted pattern would do? You could find a way to print out your pattern onto regular paper, maybe at a copy place, then use a highlighter pen to outline small sections of the grid that you work at one time.

As long as you have plenty of extra fabric in case your design runs beyond calculations, you can still work top to bottom and left to right instead of from the center out.

It sounds like I'm misunderstanding your question, so please explain where I'm going wrong.

Hi Melanie,

Thankyou for your response and yes you are correct in understanding what i was hoping to do, what i was thinking if i could draw up a grid to the specifics that makes a 14 grid template.

One of my dilemma's is that I do not know how to draw up or makes a 14 count grid or graph.

I have tried to research how to chart a graph that equates to a 14 count cross stitch graph. I appologise for my appeared vague request, but i am wanting to draw a grid template so that it will work with 14 count aida cloth only i dont know how to draw the grid/graph up.

how do I work out how many squares (stitches) make up a 14 count grid in centimetres and how wide in centimetres is each square within the grids? If i was to draw up a graph by using the table/chart function as is available in microsoft word (for example) how many rows and squares to form the chart/grid that is known as 14 count. as i do not know any other ways to measure but in metric i do not know how to recalculate from feet and inches to metres and centimetres.

I hope i have not confused you further

Kind Regards

Jodee

Jodee,

Never in all of the years I've cross stitched have I seen a calculation for Aida in centimeters!

Probably the best thing I can suggest is to convert your final desired measurements to inches, figure your counts that way, and then you can take your final desired measurements and convert them back to centimeters.

You can do the calculations right online with free online calculators. It will be a lot easier to do it that way than to try to work 14 count into centimeters. My guess is the reason for centimeter measures of Aida not being available is because it's far easier to work in inches, since measurements are already keyed that way. I'd suggest not worrying about measurements in feet at all; simply use inches. The online calculators I've found by doing a simple search return numbers in inches, not inches and feet, so you should be okay there!

Another thing is if you decide to work your pattern in segments, you could use a contrasting color thread and do a simple outline around each section so you know where the top, bottom and sides are. Then remove the outline stitch when you're all done with each section.

Hope that helps! Sorry I don't have a specific centimeter measurement for Aida; it's simply unavailable no matter how much I search for it.
