New! Caron One Pound, Caron Simply Soft and Herrschners 2-Ply Afghan palettes - thank you to BetwixtTheStitch!
New! The Herrschner's Worsted Palette - thank you to BetwixtTheStitch!
New! We've just added the palette for Deborah Norville Everyday Yarn! If you knit and/or crochet, this is for you. This is a beautiful yarn with a nice feel to it, a good alternative in worsted weight acrylic! (Thank you again to BetwixtTheStitch!)
New! The Red Heart Super Saver Palette - thank you to BetwixtTheStitch!
Welcome to Stitchboard! Feel free to sit and stay awhile. Check out our new Premier features. In addition to the ability to create larger patterns (up to 500 stitches wide), illusion knitting and private labeling (no more worries about editing those pesky and messy PDFs), we've just introduced Filet Crochet, our most popular request! We have many more features planned, too!

thanks so much @BetwixtTheStitch !!
Hi, and welcome!
Here are a couple suggestions to try.
1. Try turning on the "Anti-alias" check-box in section 8.
2. Try doing slight adjustments to brightness and contrast in section 8. You may try various combinations like set brightness to 5 or 10, or set contrast to 5 or 10, try negative 5 or 10, and see if anything makes it better.
3. You may want to try using shades of gray in section 5.
I would think that a combination of brightness and/or contrast setting changes and possibly enabling Anti-alias would be your best solution. Let me know if this helps. Otherwise I'll try to suggest something else.

Thank you! I will be watching!
Neave,
Hear, hear! Completely agree with everything you've said here!
You mentioned the cover kits...years ago, when I used to have some great bookstores nearby, I used to buy the British cross stitch magazines. Sadly, the American magazines aren't quite as sophisticated, nor do they have cover kits, so that was why I always bought British whenever I could get to the bookstores. Love, love, love those cover kits! They were always great for learning something new (and have something pretty to show for it!). BTW, take a look at my photo albums sometime...there are some older cover kits in there. This is the link to the cover kit photo album:

Oh, and what a beautiful drawing your husband did there! You should run it through as a cross stitch PDF, if you'd like to print it out as a pattern with symbols only or symbols and colors.

I will try to keep doing monthly updates at least. And I
have made some decent progress. Work has been stressful so getting
to sit, stitch and listen to audiobooks in the evenings has been a
much needed form of therapy.
Thanks for the
info on removing stains. I decided to start of simple, I soaked the
work in water that was laced with dish washing soap. It helped a
little. Definitely with the more obvious stains that were spills
from a drink. Little less with the finger grease. But to be fair, I
left it to soak overnight but didnt really move it around much to
encourage the grease to come loose. I think I will give it another
go soon.
I actually looked into Q-snaps
when I first started this project and decided that I didn't want to
use a hoop. They seemed nice but as they would have taken weeks to
ship then I was not going to wait for that. One question I still
had was that while they look more forgiving than hoops, what sort
of an effect does it have if you have to snap in an already
stitched area?
The pictures below were taken
right before I washed the piece, so apologies that its a bit dirty.
