New!  The Herrschner's Worsted Palette - thank you to BetwixtTheStitch!

New!  We've just added the palette for Deborah Norville Everyday Yarn!  If you knit and/or crochet, this is for you.  This is a beautiful yarn with a nice feel to it, a good alternative in worsted weight acrylic!  (Thank you again to BetwixtTheStitch!)

New!  The Red Heart Super Saver Palette - thank you to BetwixtTheStitch!

Welcome to Stitchboard!  Feel free to sit and stay awhile.  Check out our new Premier features.  In addition to the ability to create larger patterns (up to 500 stitches wide), illusion knitting and private labeling (no more worries about editing those pesky and messy PDFs), we've just introduced Filet Crochet, our most popular request!  We have many more features planned, too!  Laughing

Shaleigh,
This looks better and better every single time! Kiss
LOL, selfishly, I hope you finish far sooner than when you're 80...can't wait to see it finished!
I do understand, though. Real life has a habit of getting in the way. I like to flip it the birdie when it does. Laughing Take that, real life!
This is already looking so gorgeous...well, it did from when you started, part of what's so appealing are all of those gorgeous, bold colors. Kiss
Can't wait to see more! Kiss

Karla,
Excellent! Please let us know how it turns out! I'm not 100% positive, but the mockup I did on paper looks like just flipping the image 90 degrees will do the trick. Kiss

FallenShadows,
Welcome! Smile
You're correct, the blocks in the pattern each represent one stitch.
With an afghan, the best thing to do first is to figure out your gauge by making a swatch (sigh, almost no one likes doing that, but it's essential to get an idea of how many stitches and rows you'll need for your finished piece, otherwise you could end up with something that's about 30k stitches Surprised). Your swatch will tell you how many stitches per inch you'll produce with your chosen fiber/crochet hook or knitting needles. This will vary from person to person, so unfortunately there's no other way to get the numbers you need.
From there you can figure out how many stitches you'll need across for your finished desired afghan size. It's then recommended that you give the freePatternWizard an image with the dimensions of the size you want; for example, if you want an afghan that's 50 stitches across by 50 rows, you'd give it an image that's 50 pixels x 50 pixels and note in option #6 that the number of stitches are 50 across. (This won't guarantee it will be 50 rows vertically, only because the freePatternWizard currently will figure out the vertical size for you. While that will change at some point in the future, for now that can only be figured by the freePatternWizard.)
This is why it's important to figure out your gauge beforehand, so your afghan will be the size you want. Smile

arekaybee,
Welcome! Smile
Lettering is difficult because the letters will have to be large enough (e.g., no tiny lines, not large as in size) to be visible as lettering when they're sent through the freePatternWizard. My best suggestion is to experiment using a graphics program, reducing the image so that 1 pixel = 1 stitch. In a later version of the software you'll have a bit more control over something like working with an alphabet, but as of now that's not available.
In particular, I'd look for a font that's not too fancy, that doesn't have whispy lines or curly embellishments, as those would tend to get lost unless your lettering was super thick. It should be fairly basic and solid. You may also want to stay away from serifs, as that would add thinner lines that would make it difficult to to turn into a 1 pixel = 1 stitch ratio.
Hope that helps! Smile

Ava,

The Basic Palette is the one I suspect you'll want. Unless you're looking for a certain brand, such as Red Heart Super Saver, the Basic Palette is what you'll find has all of the very basic colors. Brands of yarn will have their own color names. This is why we developed the Basic Palette, because yarn is very difficult to match to specific colors, and even going across brands, which usually isn't recommended due to differences in yarn weights and differences in fibers (e.g., you wouldn't want to use fibers that require different types of care in one project!), you'll be hard pressed to find matching colors beyond the basics.

The Full Palette isn't recommended at all.

DMC is embroidery floss. While there are some who use embroidery floss to crochet, it's a very small fiber and difficult to work with, so though DMC has many color matches compared to conventional yarns, it's not recommended for crochet.
