Hi girls! Sorry you had to wait for an answer for so long. I was typing one on my phone a few days ago, had to check a vocabulary and when I got back here everything I typed was gone and I lost patience... Sorry for that!
Now that I am back on the computer I was also able to upload the pics in my x-mas album. They just have been to big and I did not have a possibility to resize them on the phone.
Wow, just reading about your cookies and treats my mouth waters and I automatically have a few pounds more on the hips - as if there weren't enough already!
Melanie, so sorry to hear that you are still not finished! I hope you will be done soon and can get a Mexican-not-too-spicy-dinner in the vicinity of your new place soon!
We actually have SNOW in Vienna! We came back home yesterday evening and it is snowing since 2 days, all over Austria. In a big city like Vienna, this brings grey mud, loud snow-clearing vehicles and annoying salt and gravel on the roads... But in the countryside, it is quite nice!

Melanie,
I don't get tired of cooking as much as I get tired of trying to figure out what to cook.
The family isn't much help, "I don't know" isn't a dish I know how to make.
I feel for you with the dry, chapped hands.
Mine can get pretty bad in winter too, and it isn't near as brutal here.
Astrid,
What beautiful gifts. Love the loop shawls, and that scarf is wonderful.
Do your winters get brutal, with the single digit cold like the area where Melanie is?
I understand about trying to use the phone to upload pics, I'm learning to do it from a tablet. Melanie told me a trick for resizing and it works. I upload the pics to facebook and they are automatically resized, then I can just copy them here.

Sherry, I know that feeling. I only got 1 person besides me to cook for, but "no idea" is also the most common answer I get...
What a neat trick with the pictures! It worked with the resizing, but I don't see any possibility to add pics to a comment anymore...
At the moment, we have about minus 4 degrees Celsius, with translates to approximately 25 Fahrenheit. It can get down to minus 20, but luckily not so often in Vienna. But, of course, in the Alps!
Thank you for your feedback to the gifts!

Astrid,
It gets tiring that they leave it up to us, doesn't it?
The problem with not having the option to add pics to a comment sounds like it should be mentioned to support. They can't fix what they don't know about.
Sounds like your winters get pretty frigid, too. Here, a night time low of 25 F happens a few times in a bad year.

Astrid,
So glad you made it back here to post your reply and pics!
I looked at what you made and love it all...if anyone gets tired of anything, send it right here!
Now that you mention it, I wouldn't know how to resize pics on my phone, either. As Sherry said, the only way I know to do it is by uploading to Facebook, because that resizes them (pretty effortlessly!) to the point where they can be uploaded. It's a handy cheat...fast and easy!
LOL, and I agree...Sherry's food sounds soooo good...it makes one gain weight just from reading about it!
Thanks for your kind words about our move. Well, I think (hope) we're nearing the end. But it's such horrible work, that's for sure.
Everything seems to take forever.
Is it that you usually don't get a lot of snow in Vienna?
We normally get snow here...quite a bit some years. Thankfully, it's just cold and not snowy...I don't know what we'd do if we were working around snow.
LOL, to us, snow is the most offensive four letter word of all.
Do you like snow?
So glad you were able to resize your pics...such a lovely treat!

Sherry,
LOL, you need to invent a dish called "I don't know." If it's something they all hate, they'll be sure to quickly pick something so you'll never make "I don't know" again!
Ugh, so you guys get very dry air during the winter, too?
You would think with all of the precipitation we usually get during the winter it wouldn't be so dry...but that's just not the case...it's dryer than dry.
I could understand it with the winter we've had so far, with so little snow, but it's normally pretty dry in the winter, even with the deepest, heaviest snows we've ever had.
Hope your hands won't get too chapped this winter.

Astrid,
Please let me know what problem you're having with adding pics to a comment...is that here in the Community, or elsewhere?

Hi Melanie!
I just don't see any option for adding a pic and cannot remember if there ever was one? Do I normally just copy&paste the pictures? If so, there is no problem, I just cannot do it in the phone since I do not know how to copy it there! :p
We usually geht a little snow about once a year in Vienna, but not as much as elsewhere in Austria. And it doesn't stay that long because of traffic... Also, with all the concrete of streets and buildings, it stays a little warmer in the city!

Melanie,
Be careful, I've been hearing that you"re in for a dangerous cold spell.
They're even expecting snow in Vegas!
Most winters are pretty dry here, though we are expecting some freezing rain tonight.
I'm hoping it stays west of the metroplex, like they think, I have to get out tonight taking kids to and from work.
I really like the idea of creating a dish called "I don't know", I'll have to really think on it to come up with something everyone hates.
I'd hate to do that to my poor hubby though, he never complains about anything. So he'd just eat it and I'd never know.
Astrid, we get that "heat island" effect, too. The DFW metroplex stays a bit warmer due to the amount of concrete and traffic.

Astrid,
If you're trying to add a photo here, there are tools available when you reply...you'll see them at the top, above the text window (three lines of them). On the top line, toward the center right, there's a picture of a tree. If you mouse over, the tool tip says, "Add Image." When you click on that, it gives you a window that allows you to browse your computer and choose an image.

Sherry,
Ugh, we have to have everything completed by Monday, and forecasts are calling for a big
mess
all weekend long.
I don't know how this is going to go.
Hope your freezing rain didn't happen!
It doesn't seem to matter how much precipitation we get...the winters are still dry, dry, dry.
If only we could take some of that awful summer humidity and apply it to the winter! It's annoying to go around with chapped hands, and 1000 times worse with what we're going through, because there's no time to stop for moisturizing or anything.
Awww, your poor hubby!
Definitely, I wouldn't pull the "I don't know" on him. Maybe make a dish he would love and everyone else would hate? Although then you'd only be able to make that again when it's just you and hubby.
Wow, wish we had the "heat effect" here. Guessing not even at our (slightly more urban) new place, since the city isn't
that
big.

Melanie,
We got lucky and the temps stayed just above freezing here.
Can you believe it's Jan. and we still have green grass?
I sure hope you get all the moving done before the weather takes a turn for the worse.
Cooking things that only hubby and I will et is easy.
For instance, I made our traditional black eyed peas and ham for new years day and, of course, no one else wanted to eat them.
We just told them that if they didn't want to eat it, they had to carry them in their pocket or be poor all year.

That's exactly the problem... I don't get the tree icon. But I am sure it has to do with being in the phone!
All our snow has melted in the meantime and just a few minutes ago, it started snowing again! This snow now looks wet and sticky and I think it won't last...
Poor Melanie! I hope you'll finish in time and will be able to relax for a few days after being finished!!!

Yes, it is definitely because I was on the phone. The whole menu is not displayed on my phone (also format options etc.). Now I am back on my PC and can show you the weather development of the last few hours.
This was almost exactly an hour ago, rain turned into snow. The picture is bad, but the white stripes you see in front of the street lamp are snowflakes:
About the same time, snow was staying on cars, but the streets still were to warm and wet:
Now, an hour later, snow is still falling densely and now also stays put on the streets:
I hope that it gets better. To be honest, one week of snow has been enough for me.
And although I do not need to move right now (thank God), a good friend of mine is and I am feeling with her and with Melanie of course. I can also relate to the chopped hands, I have them all the time, especially in winter. I think this is also due to the dry air in the rooms caused by heating...

Sherry,
Woo hoo, glad your temps stayed above freezing!
No, we didn't get the moving done before the temps dropped like a
stone
.
It was freaking miserable, miserable on top of miserable with an extra helping of...miserable. And a side of miserable, too.
My hands are only better now because I've been using Udder Cream. I seriously couldn't even put on a pair of gloves without severe pain from my split and chapped hands. They still look awful, but they actually looked
worse
, so I'm glad there's a great treatment! It started healing within hours of using the stuff.
So now we're
finally
finished. The last day we pulled an all-nighter and got it done. It was also awful.
It had snowed, temps were below freezing, and the roads weren't great. My husband wanted to give up. But we stayed with it and on the last day, though I was not sad as I thought I'd be, we did both have a teary moment looking at our empty living room. And then we drove away, saying we don't want to go back...
ever
...unless they said we had to go back for some reason. But we don't and won't.
I had thought I'd be crying as we drove away, but after all of the crap we went through, I was actually not in any kind of crying mood!
It was nice to drive up to our desperately-in-need-of-rehab house, warts and all, and know we didn't have to go out immediately thereafter, nor did we have to do any more moving. We napped for a few hours, drove out and made a few important stops, then returned to...snow. Again. But we made it home in not a lot of snow and then this morning we plowed out our driveway and the neighbors'.
The front sidewalk and other neighbors' sidewalks, too.
I even hand shoveled the one neighbor's steps, because hubby had plowed out his sidewalk and front walkway as far as he could to the steps, so I just finished the job.
LOL, is that some old saying about black eyed peas and ham - and being poor?
I can't say I'd want to eat that, but I'd definitely try it...especially if the alternative was to be poor!
