Sherry,
I can't wait to be done with the "working in the ends part,"
ugh
, to try that! I sent your helpful instructions to my phone so they'll always be available.
And it can't look more odd than that first slip stitch did! That was soooooo confusing!
Exactly! I'm so glad they're understanding...if they weren't...well, then I guess they wouldn't really be much in the way of friends, huh?! We seem to trade off on the "understanding" part.
It seems to go one way or another year after year.
Just wish it wouldn't go back to me any year, but this year, it's been the
worst
!
My bestie actually
loves
getting things after the holidays are over. She says all of the excitement is over and then she loves to get something in the mail.
She's got a point!
That would be wonderful if you'd put up the pics and the pattern...would you like me to make it into a PDF? I think I can do that.
Is it difficult for you to work on crafty things when your husband is around, as well? I have a lot of trouble with that. At least when I'm in front of the TV, then I can work mostly uninterrupted, but when we're dealing with holidays, food, etc, things get much too hairy!
Well, all 16 of the "critical" gifts are crocheted...just need to work in the ends on 8 of them, sigh. Did 8 already. Then I'll probably finish off the candy corn hat and after I get a few other things accomplished, will write up the pattern if I can find my original notes, sigh. But first I have to make the
other
gifts and figure out a non-dishcloth one. No clue on that one. Dishcloths wouldn't be useful in this case.

Melanie,
I agree with her,
I love the idea of stretching it out.
That would be awesome if you could do a pdf for me, if it's simple of course. I know how busy you are.
When hubby is home, I feel a need to feed him more.
That takes some of my time away from crafty things, other than that it's not difficult at all. He plays his World of Warcraft on the computer, I crochet, and we are both happy.
Sometimes his brother will pop in on us, and hubby might show him something I'm working on (yesterday it was the lizard scarf and eyeballs).
Again I have to put the pics on the computer before I can tell if they turned out.

Sherry,
I agree with her, too! When things are late, there's still something to look forward to getting!
Well, I signed up for another four sets of dishcloths.
These will go to various friends. I bought another cone of yarn...but not that awful shades-of-blue from before, as I'm sick of it! Now I'll be using green, purple and white. I'm not happy with the green in there, but the purple isn't bad, so that and the white will be different from the tiresome blue, blue, blue!
I may even work the same four patterns again. Sigh.
Oh, yeah, I have to do some PDFs, anyway, so it's no biggie! I used to have a PDF writer with the PDF reader I downloaded, but then it messed up my word processor, so I had to take out the PDF writing portion of it. But I'm guessing it will still work, just not directly through my word processor, which is
ancient
.
Awwww, I'm sure your husband appreciates the extra attention and food!
We sort of share the cooking here. He's a
much
better cook than I am...but I do like it when he wants me to make something for dinner.
We have our own computers now, thank goodness, so no arguing, no need to share.
We did share for a few years, IIRC...not the most fun thing.
Oooh, so what did your BIL think of your lizard scarf?

Melanie,
Are we nuts or what? I signed up for at least 2 more spa sets for my girls. One will have to be in shades of pink and sage, and I'm still waiting on the final color word on the other.
I'm thinking that that purple and green may be about the same as the spa set I did for my friend, it was okay even if I'm not a "big" fan of green.
Hubby surprised me last night by cooking for me, he's a decent cook too.
I just do most of it because he still has a day job.
We have another computer, I just need to install a wireless ethernet card to be able to get online with it and I've been in no big hurry to do that until I can comfortably sit at the computer for long enough to accomplish something.
Well hubby and his brother are both kind of nutty, so it's a compliment when they say "look at that" or joke about my "little" 5 foot long lizard, and "look at that, she's even putting little legs on him". They are impressed with it, or they just wouldn't notice at all.

Sherry,
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh,
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
! You did that, too?! Oh, the humanity!
I guess we're just gluttons for punishment!
I should take a picture of the purple and green. I'm not a big green fan, either, and it's not my favorite shade of purple, but at least it's not that freakin' blue variegated
again
! I would have to start screaming at the top of my lungs if I worked with that stuff again so soon. And I really like blue, but anything that screams "the same" gets tiresome after a while.
Awww, I'm so glad your hubby can cook, too!
My ideal fantasy man is one who can cook and clean...LOL, basically, a male wife!
(I didn't say that!
)
If it's uncomfortable for you to sit at the computer, I don't blame you for not installing the wireless ethernet card. If you're going to be spending
any
amount of time being uncomfortable, it's just not worth it.
LOL, do perfectly sane men even
exist
anymore?!
I've heard they went the way of the dodo bird.
Seriously, that's nice how they appreciate what you do.
Though some older men would never admit to it, it seems many really are fascinated with crafty things!
The scarf sounds totally adorable...can't wait to see it!

Melanie,
Does the purple have more of a red undertone, with a kind of sagey green?
I get tired of working with the same color too, even when it's one I love. I have a 12 oz. skein of just that purple I've had to put away for a bit. After making dish cloths with it, then using the purple/green variegated for the spa set, I'm tired of it for now.
Lol, at male wife.
Right now that scarf is still curling at the head end from the TKS, I'm actually thinking that I might add a tongue to counteract that. I really don't want to try and get pics until I can get rid of that curl.
So I looked up gecko tongues, some are red but some are bluish and some are pinkish. The pinkish one's seem to be the lighter colored lizards, so that is definitely out.
I'm leaning towards the red.

Sherry,
I'm not looking at it now, but going from memory, it's kind of a plum purple as opposed to a violet. The green...forest, perhaps? I'll see if I can find a pic of it online.
Argh, not a good one. These are the cones:
http://www.peachesandcreme.com/yarns/cones
The new one is "Pageantry," the old one was "Hippi." If you mouse over the pictures, they'll show somewhat closeups of them, but not really good ones.
Okay, I just went and actually
looked
at the yarn, because I didn't like that crappy picture. It's dark plum, a light to medium violet, then a forest, a sage and a lighter green and a white.
So it's not the greatest combo (though the greens aren't the ones I dislike the most!), but it's certainly not the worst.
I feel the
same way
! I wouldn't have thought I'd get tired of seeing that nice blue variegated, but it's so old hat now.
The "Pageantry" colorway isn't great (ugh, green), but I'm definitely liking it better because I'm not tired of it!
I got tired of my favorite blue beads when I made an amulet purse. Anything that's same old, same old, I guess!
I think that will be
cute
with the lizard tongue! Do you think it will counteract the curl? That's the one big drawback of TKS, sigh, that curl.
I think red will be perfect for the tongue!

Melanie,
It is the same, I will say it works up very pretty even if I would have preferred more of the plum and less green.
I worked a bath mitt in the loop st and the spiraled colors were very pretty.
Doing the tongue in TPS or sc should easily counteract the curl, I'll probably do TPS because
1. I really don't care for the look of sc done in the back and forth rows, and
2. I don't want to wrestle with turning that scarf every few stitches.
Now my son is asking for more dish towels, so I guess I signed up for more of those too.

Sherry,
Ooh, thank you...I'm so happy to hear it works out well with the purples & greens...and I'm sure I'll feel the same way...would prefer more of the purple!
I love when variegated spirals like that! I bet it's gorgeous!
I hope the TPS does counteract the curl.
I agree about sc done in back and forth rows...bleah!
And you're right, TPS doesn't have to be turned. For only a handful of stitches in a row, that's
so
much better not to turn!
More dishtowels...groan! There goes playtime, sigh.
I feel your pain.

Melanie,
Blah, I've been feeling tired the last few days, so I decided to work the mindless diagonal for a dish towel yesterday. When I got down to the home stretch after turning the second corner I realized I didn't have enough of the plum yarn to finish.
Had to rip it all the way back to the first few rows in order to add stripes and have enough yarn.
On a brighter note, I have to take my son to Petsmart today to get crickets for his lizard, and that always means a trip to Joanne for me since it is next door.

Sherry,
Oh, no!
Hate
running out of yarn!
Wow, you went all the way back!
So what color are you going to use with the plum? I like blue with plum. I find it a bit dismaying that when I want to buy yarn, I have to use a plum-green variegated instead of a plum-blue, which I think would look better.
Ooh, sounds like you got the better part of the deal on the trip!
Not that I mind some of the pet stores...especially when they have a few kitties up for adoption, as ours do.
Oh, I was so sad...last time we went to the pet store, there was a gorgeous and very sad tortie. Someone had adopted her sister. They were a bonded pair. She looked up every time the doors opened, in hopes her sister would return.
If I could have adopted her, I would have. I felt so bad for the poor little girl.
I hope she finds a very loving family soon and can forget all about her sister.
Wow, I wish our JoAnn's were as close as the pet store! I'd go there frequently!

Melanie,
I've been combining the Periwinkle with the plum in my dishcloths, and had been planning to use it for the edging and the topper on the towel.
So now it will be the plum and periwinkle diagonal stripe with periwinkle edging and topper.
The main reason I don't care to work with the variegated is that I like to put the colors I want, where I want them.
But for now, Jo Anne was out of the solid plum so I picked up the sage/pink variegated for the next spa set. They didn't have a solid that would match either the pink or the green,
(
who makes those decisions?) so I'll have to edge it with the variegated.
I definitely get the better end of the bargain on that trip.
I don't like to go into the pet stores
, I want to take them all home. I'm the crazy lady who feeds all the strays, whether it be animals or kids.
Ok, that's not as weird as it sounds, my kids friends always found a warm welcome and a hot, home cooked meal at our house.
We have to go get crickets every couple of weeks, which means I get to go to Jo Ann.

Sherry,
Oooh, I always love the periwinkle/plum combo!
Love the way you've compensated for the lack of enough of the plum.
I'm sorry you had to tear way back to do it, but at least you'll have a nice combo when it's all done!
I don't blame you for making your own color combos. I'm not crazy about the green in the one variegated colorway...it's okay, not the greatest, though. Mainly, I bought it because the cones are far cheaper than the skeins. With the skeins, I wouldn't have been able to make all 16 of the gifts (20, counting the "discards," with maybe 21 or 22ish, counting the leftover yarn) so cheaply...it would have been probably about 2 dishcloths per "normal" sized skein.
The sage/pink combo sounds nice!
I have
no
idea who makes the decisions to manufacture certain variegated colors together in the first place, and then who chooses the lines the stores will carry...grrrrrrrrrrr!
You would
think
someone would have the common sense when choosing colors for a store to be sure there's a solid that matches it, to increase sales...sigh, not so.
Even the manufacturers should be wary of this, as well as which colors to combine for variegated colors.
Oh, and have you encountered the "scents" yarns?!
I hate giving scented things to people when I don't know what they like scent-wise. It's different if I know someone likes a certain one, or if it's a candle scented like vanilla or something...but the perfume-y scents...ick! They make me feel all sneezy, and worse, I worry about giving them to someone...I have friends who are sensitive to scents and chemicals.
Awww, I feed the stray animals, too.
(LOL, kids, no, but they have no reason to hang out here.) I want to adopt all of the sweet kitties, the ferrets, even the birds...but our little furchild would be very unhappy, so I don't.
Oh, no, that didn't sound weird...I would definitely think that your kids would bring their friends home...it didn't sound like you'd walk around outside with a bowl of food going, "Here, kid! Here, kiddo!"
LOL, hilarious thought, though, huh?!
Well, that's definitely the better part of the bargain, to go to JoAnn's!

Melanie,
I definitely agree that the cones are a better bargain, also, if your going to make larger items 1 ball is not enough and I'd rather buy the larger cones than have to start a new ball in the middle of a project.
The only reason I was so low on the plum is that I'd already used it to make several dish cloths and a dish towel.
Just FYI, Herrschnerr's has the cones in many solid colors.
I have seen those scented one's, but like my DIL says, "what's the point when it will probably disappear with the first washing?"
Like you, I'm very wary of giving scented anything unless I know the person well enough to know thier preferences and/or sensitivities. Many of those scented candles make me absolutely nauseous.
Oh my gosh,
that really gave me a giggle. Imagining myself in a housecoat and hair curlers maybe, wandering around the neighborhood. Hahahaha

Sherry,
Yes, I completely agree...bleh, one skein of yarn is totally inadequate to making a larger item. I comfortably got 16 dishcloths out of the one cone...plus the three "discards," plus whatever the leftover will make, whether that's not quite one, a full one, perhaps two or three (though I doubt more than one)!
Oh, yeah, the dishtowels will definitely deplete a cone! But they're so nice and useful.
Wow, thank you...I haven't thought of Herrschnerr's in years! I used to be on their mailing list long ago. Drooled over their catalogs many times...now I'm sure they're online...going to check them out!
Well, I'm very, very relieved to hear your DIL has said the scent (stink, LOL) disappears with the first washing! All I know is I really didn't like the smell, and like I said, it made me feel all sneezy.
Ugh, without knowing someone well, it's impossible to know how much they'll like a scented item. I agree...some of the scented candles aren't very nice smelling...some smell delish...all depends on the scent/manufacturer!
LOL, you wearing the housecoat and hair curlers, wandering the neighborhood going, "Here, kids, here, kiddies!" and waving a bowl of food and a bag of candy...me waving a bowl of cat food and a bag of cat treats, looking like the crazy cat lady!
What a pair, huh?!
