Written crochet pattern from a graph?
June 24, 2013 at 6:50:29 PM

Hi, I just joined and haven't had time to look at the site in detail, but I was wondering if the Stitchboard software can convert a crochet graph into actual written instructions. Sites like MyPCStitch.com do it, so I was wondering if this site did it as well. I find reading written instructions a lot easier than reading a graph. Thanks in advance.

Patrice,

At this point in time it's only possible to generate graphs, but we definitely take suggestions into account for future versions of the software, and that's a great one...thank you so much!  Smile  The software is a continual work in progress, so we love to hear suggestions like yours!  Smile

Patrice,

It shouldn't really be a problem to do that.  Since the entire pattern is created with mathematics anyway, I think it would actually be pretty easy to add this.

I'll definitely place it on my "to do" list.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Wonderful, Terry! Glad there are math whiz's like you out there :-). You know, since these patterns use single crochet exclusively, all you really need is the row #, some kind of designation for the color (like a number), and the # of stitches to be executed in each color. Eliminating the words would cut down on the total # of pages in the pattern. Then, you'd just have to explain the format so the pattern can be read.

And thanks for having the Lion Brand color palette; most of the other free sites only use DMC thread colors, so it's great to have the yarn colors for those of us who use it.

Patrice,

No problem...we love the idea of the software being particularly useful, because we definitely want people to find value in it!  Smile  Feel free to post any pictures of your finished work so we can see what you're doing...it's exciting to us to not only know people are using the software, but to see finished works made with our software would be fantastic!  Smile

How do I find where to do this? I am having the hardest time reading the graph.

If you're logged in, you'll see step #7, which are the output settings.  One of the settings is "Pattern or Word Chart."

Has this option been removed? I am logged in and do not see it. I have created patterns here before and had that option. I no longer see it.

Suzieq,

Welcome! Smile

The option definitely hasn't been removed. What do you show as your options in the pulldown for #7 where it says: "Pattern or Word Chart:"? It should say:
Graph Only
Word Chart Only
Graph and Word Chart

It isn't showing on mine either. There's no option for a word chart. Bummer. Word charts are so much easier for me to follow than graphs.

The option won't be available if you've chosen to see the pattern on-screen. It will only show in PDF.
Also, if you're not logged in, the option won't be available.
