How to add extra info to a cross stitch pattern for customers
July 13, 2020 at 9:01:38 PM

Hello,

I am happily enjoying your cross stitch pattern maker as I am making patterns from my artwork to sell to customers.

I've been very impressed by what is able to be generated and I would like to be able to add more information to the pattern.

Is it possible to add extra fields such as:
* needle type and size recommendations
* recommended frame sizes
* list of tools for the project
* link to Cross Stitch Skein and Thread Estimator

I'd like to add my own cover page too so I can include a picture of the finished design and more information. I'd also like to include sizing in cm's and change the spelling, eg. color to colour, and Company to Business (I don't trade as the legal entity of a company so that's misleading for my local audience).

Does the premium option ($US5) for private labelling cover this, as in delivering a Word document for editing that I can then save as a PDF.

As PDF's are flattened files that can't readily be edited I'm thinking a Word document would be the easiest solution and could be part of that Premium option. Is that possible please?

Many thanks for your help, I do appreciate it.  Smiley

Molly,
Those are such excellent ideas! Kiss
Our apologies - we don't yet have that amount of flexibility within the program. While our private label does have a "notes" section, it's likely too limited to contain everything you want.
We've been discussing your ideas and find they're all things we'd eventually like to implement. Kiss We're only sorry we don't have the ability to work on them immediately. (Our first priority is basic functionality issues.)
I wish I could give you a time frame, but at this point it would be too soon and I'd only be guessing (and that could be incorrect). All I can say is please stick with us and hopefully we'll be able to do something sooner, rather than later. Kiss
And thank you so much for giving us more to think about! We have a pretty long laundry list of things we want to accomplish, but we're always looking for new things to add to it! Kiss

Thank you so much for such a genuine reply, I do appreciate it.

I've shown my local textile shop owner my first pattern I've made and she thinks it's great so that's a very good start. She also said that as the fabric comes in inches her local customers can speak and think in inches too so the cm issue is removed for me now. As a quilter I can think in inches too so I know what she means. (In
Australia we moved from the old imperial measurements, including inches, in the 1960's when we went metric.)

I've bought the Premium package for the Private Labelling and am fairly happy with it. I would like to be able to include my # hashtag in the footer but couldn't customise it.

With the Notes section I've been able to add some useful information but I think I've added so much that the Company name top row has disappeared. As I'm only using 20 thread colours  there is room at the bottom of the front page for all the fields plus my Notes. Maybe that's an easy fix? But often what seems easy with technical projects takes three times as long!

I certainly know what you're talking about with a long to do list, mine is always growing and there's not enough time to get through it all.

Part of the solution I'm working with now is a Useful Information Guide I've made up to go with the pattern that has Tools and Notions, Number of Skeins Required for the Project (I worked up a table with the variables of fabric count, stitch count ranges and threads (1, 2, 3) - based on that handy skein estimator) and a Needle Size Chart as my textile shop lady said customers just want to come in with a shopping checklist. At this stage it is a separate PDF but hopefully I'll find a way to include it in the Pattern PDF.

Lots of learning to do and I'm really enjoying this project. Thank you for making such a carefully thought through tool that is affordable to experiment with.

Molly,
You're very, very welcome. Kiss
I'm so happy to hear your local store likes your first pattern! Kiss
Oh, yes, everyone but us here in the US went to metric...I can't figure out why we're still sticking with the old ways! It's so much harder to calculate. Frown We were supposed to change over in 1980, but then that plan was scrapped, for some unknown reason. We ended up with some things in metric, like sodas being measured in liters. Otherwise, we're mostly using the old measurements, except now there's no more plan to switch.
The good news is I used to read a lot of British cross stitch publications and they also use inches for cross stitch, though I'm not sure why! Wink
I'm glad you like the Private Label feature. Kiss
Was there an issue with trying to use the footer for your hashtag?
I'd have to ask Terry, who does our support, if there's a reason the bottom of the floss listings can't be use for something else. It may be that to do so would cause a problem for people who have larger listings and will still try to use that area for more notes, but I'm not familiar enough with the technical end to know if that's true, so that's just a guess.
Oh, right, those to do lists, huh? They grow and grow by themselves, I swear! I want to yell, "Cut it out!" at them! Wink
Wow, you're really doing more than most designers...that's wonderful! Kiss When I used to have a semi-local cross stitch store I certainly could have used beautifully written patterns like yours, to get everything I needed in one stop! Kiss I'm drooling over the idea!
You're very welcome and thank you for all of your kind words - and I hope the freePatternWizard will continue to help you build a most successful business! Kiss

Molly,
I checked with Terry and the bottom of the page under floss listings is actually important because it's more than just a listing; it gets calculated for each different size of paper. So to add more notes underneath could interfere with printing.

Hello,
Thank you for checking on all of that, I do appreciate it.

I took my initial patterns to a local award winning needlecraft lady for feedback and I'd basically been creating advanced level patterns so now I'm trying to simplify my designs. So lots more learning.

Many thanks again.

Molly,
You're so welcome! Kiss
IMO there's room for all levels of patterns out there! Some like advanced patterns to have a challenge, some like simpler patterns. I personally enjoy a challenge...at least when I have time! Wink
