I am trying to make a pattern out of a black and white line drawing...
Why on earth does the program add 28 colors and extra stuff to it making it IMPOSSIBLE to stitch properly?

all i want is a simple balck and white line to stitch...

Welcome!

In option #5c, did you choose "black and white"? If you left it at the default of "entire palette," you'll get a whole bunch of colors, especially if you're using a jpg image, which technically has colors in it, which the program can see.

yes eventually i noticed the "black and white"button

however when i make a pattern it misses so many stitches it's not recognizable

either way, sooo many shades of grey it's impossible to do or sooo many missing parts that the pattern is nowhere near complete

when it's set to max size it's closer than using for example 80 stitches max but that's not saying much.

confusing because it's a simple line drawing...seems that would be MUCH simpler than a complex photo or such.

iv'e downloaded a few coloring pages to stitch up, tried all the options i can think of.
Contrast, brightness settings, etc...
even tried to print it out and "fill in" the missing stitches, HA a lesson in madness!

is it just not possible to do this?

FYI, wanted to stitch a few pillows of the Flintstones for my grandaughter

Adores them as much as i do and LOTS of coloring pages free online

Okay, a couple of things I can think of:

Are you using "Black and White" or "Shades of Gray"? Those are both very different.

Another important thing is not to use the freePatternWizard as a graphics program. If you're working with an image that's, say, 5000 pixels x 5000 pixels and you bring it down to the default of 80, it won't reduce the image size for you; it will simply try to pick out 80 pixels. That's best off done first in a graphics program. There are two powerful ones I can recommend (free!) if you're using a PC. You're best off reducing the image to the size of what you're trying to make, so if it's 80 stitches wide, you need to make it 80 pixels wide using a graphics program first.

This may be a bit dicey, though, since a jpg format, if that's what you have, already has colors added to it. Resizing the image will add more colors. So it's not as simple as having a black & white image and reducing it to make a smaller black & white image. Certain file formats (such as GIF) are better than others, but simply changing an image from one format to a better one doesn't actually improve the image as much as it only changes the format...with all of the extraneous colors already in it.

So my first suggestion is to decide what size across you want the item to be, take the image and run it through a graphics program, resizing it to the finished size (number of stitches = pixels) you want, remove the extraneous colors you'll be able to see by zooming in and then try it out with the freePatternWizard, being sure to set the number of pixels in #6 to the number of stitches you want across (so if you want 100 stitches, your image will be 100 pixels wide which will become 100 stitches across). What you'll actually see in your graphics program is what the freePatternWizard will see.

Oooh, we're Flintstones fans here, too! LOL, Fred and Barney were pretty good actors...wonder whatever happened to them?

actually makes sense

in looking closer (enlarging) at the pics i've downloaded, it seems the pixels are a bit off as it sits

with some a bit lighter shades than others. not sure i'd call them "grey" but i can understand how the software would call them so.

so on to the image software, gonna poke around and see if i can "clean" them up so solid black and resize as you suggested!
Great idea almost too obvious lol!
pixel = stitches

i'll gladly share what i've come up with and maybe others can use them or perhaps just get ideas.

Excellent...glad to hear you've got something to work with now!

It can be difficult to work with already-created images, especially ones not really meant to have any kind of quality to them, such as coloring pages. Which is a shame because they're so much fun! Why not make patterns from them? (Especially of such stars as the Flintstones!

)

Seriously, please do let us know how it goes...and when you have pictures of your work, feel free to post!

Even if it's not work created with the freePatternWizard...LOL, we just love to drool!
