Psmith,

Welcome!  Smile

Before you go to a big, complex pattern, my suggestion would be to start with some small graphs that you can find online.  It would be daunting to start with a very large graph first; as I found out with bead crochet, starting without practicing or trying it out can be very difficult.  Until I stopped thinking about all of the big projects I could make with bead crochet and started some practice pieces with yarn and big plastic pony beads, I couldn't do bead crochet.  Starting with the yarn and pony beads made all of the difference.

That's why my recommendation is to try something smaller first.  Try some smaller patterns where you can become accustomed to working on graphs.  Once you've done a few of those and know how to handle changing colors and weave in the ends, then I'd say to start with a larger graph, but until then, I wouldn't suggest going to a large, complex pattern for your very first graphed project.  Smile
