Melanie,

Initially I was looking for the pattern for the rug below.

Couldn't find this one, then saw the other one that I asked your help on. Anyway, I have now come across the rug below, it is called "Splendid" by Patricia Kristoffersen, is in the out of print pamphlet "Wonderful Doilies" (American School of Needlework #1277), which is not available on Amazon.

I think it is really pretty as well, I just love texture.

Janice,

Oooh, I love this one, too!  Kiss  I remember a crochet mailing list ages ago, where everyone always talked about the "Trish K" doilies.  Truthfully, I never would have thought at the time of using doily designs as rugs!

I agree about the texture.  Those bobbles are amazing and the whole thing looks like one layer on top of another, and I'm still thinking of various colors to show off that layered look!  Kiss

So are you thinking of making this one, as well?  Kiss  Nothing says you need to be limited to one!

I think the rugs are such a practical use of doilies.  There's only so much you can do with a doily, but using them as rugs gives them a wonderful purpose!  Kiss

Melanie,

I shouldn't even be thinking about combining patterns since I haven't crocheted in over 30 years, and even then, the only larger projects (that I can remember) were a 6' round rag rug for my kitchen and an Aran afghan I did for my mom.  Other than that I made a few small doilies and sewed narrow elastic around the edge to help contain my daughters' upswept hair for dance classes. (Another purpose for doilies.)  Presumptious of me that I can.  But I probably will try, basically it's just math, right?  But it does add a lot of time to projects.

I like this rug, but the holes in the middle round are just too large, so I would have to adjust them (then would need to adjust everything the whole way out) or fill them in with a lacy pattern, hmmm.  But maybe insert that "holey" round into the other pattern???

I would like to make 3 rugs: round one for the sunroom wall, and two oval/oblong ones.

I really do like the one on that website (pic #1 below), but have no idea how to make it. Any ideas?  And I can actually picture some round (maybe hex or other shaped), maybe 18" diameter ones climbing the walls in my vaulted rooms.  Can't you see them on the dark blue/green painted walls, maybe 3 with the one in the center mounted higher?

I ordered 3 Patricia Kristoffersen books from Amazon (one came yesterday).  You probably know this, but on ravelry.com, you can key in the name of a book, and it will show you pics of all the patterns inside (and other crocheters' color variations as well).  I would hate to order a book blindly.  Also Patricia Kristoffersen has video galleries of some of her books (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ak8KbwBoNAs).  I ordered "Absolutely Gorgeous Doilies" and "Doilies with a Twist" and another one that is not in the video gallery which has a pattern that I really like (pic #2 below).

I'd have to live to 200 to get all my projects done.

Janice

Janice,

Meh, it's like riding a bike...you never forget how to crochet!  Smile

I don't think it's presumptuous at all to want to change patterns around.  It is all math, so as long as you can work out the numbers, that's what counts!

I understand about the holes in the pattern being too large...perhaps they could be filled with a lacy pattern, as you said, or maybe even some pretty shells?  Or flowers would be interesting.

I did some exhaustive searching for that oval pattern (yet another gorgeous one!), but the only matches I could find were all on Russian sites and (from what I could glean from the Google translations) were either for kits, videos (ha, in Russian?  Sigh) or the finished rug.  Pay in rubles!  LOL.

Also, if I had to hazard a guess, they're using a published pattern, perhaps a Patricia Kristoffersen, to make these kits/videos/sell the finished rugs.  The reason I say that is because the first Kristoffersen was also on that site, which has me believing it's pretty much the same thing.

Couldn't just about any doily be used for a rug?  I love the idea of using them as wall hangings, and I'd have to think that just looking at designs available online would yield plenty of options.  Smile

Interesting...take a look at that linked video again...I swear the "Pineapple Oval" (PK 55 at :55 on the video) starts out almost exactly like the pic above!  So I do wonder now if that particular pattern isn't one of Kristoffersen's, and that Russian site has simply used it, figuring nobody would know where they got it?  And in addition to that, considering Kristoffersen only seems to have books for sale, not electronic patterns, that would make her work even more obscure and subject to copying.  Frown

What makes me think it's one of Kristoffersen's is because the other one was also pictured on that same Russian site.  And it looks kind of like a Patricia Kristoffersen design.

If you're getting three of her books, perhaps there's a chance the oval design is in one of them?  If not, I bet you'll find plenty of other designs that will be suitable for rugs!  Kiss

LOL, so you're going to live to be 200, too, hmm?  Laughing

Melanie,

Funny you said the online oval rug starts out like "Pineapple Oval", it is one I've been drawn to.  However, the pic of the online rug is not very clear, but I believe that you're right.  I've been attracted to that reverse curve on the "Pineapple Oval", and it very well could be the same, I see it now (2 heads are better than 1).  I noticed that narrow reverse curve is actually a wide "V" from the "Pineapple Round" pic below.

Looking them up on others' renditions on ravelry.com, brings different parts of them to life.

I also thought it might be a PK one, for the same reasons, but now is not the time to send your rubles to Russia.

Thanks,

Janice

Janice,

It sounds to me that even though you may not be able to find the exact design, you have enough to go on to make a very similar, if not identical, version!  Kiss

And the round blue doily is also a gorgeous pattern to use for a rug!  Kiss

There's also nothing that says you can't combine different parts of different patterns...as long as the math works.  Smile  Sort of the way you do with cross stitch, but with crochet!  Smile

LOL!  I honestly wouldn't feel confident sending rubles to Russia for a number of reasons, but particularly with the issue of not knowing the language and thus, knowing nothing about the site.  Frown  Can you imagine the headache of getting the wrong item and trying to get an exchange?  Or not receiving anything at all?  Surprised  Shudder.

Melanie,

The blue round doily is actually the round version of the "Pineapple Oval".  I inserted it as it is easier to see the "V"s.

Well, my 2nd PK doily book came.  The photography of the doilies is so lackluster, that if I went through all the labor of love to create those doilies (ha ha), I think I would have to fight Leisure Arts against sending those blah photos to press.  I will print out a page or two of the prettier pics from online and keep them inside the front cover to remind me how pretty they could be.
