Hello Evelyn and welcome,

Which crochet did you choose, standard or tunisian? If you chose standard, single crochet will give the best results.
Which size hook you use depends on the yarn, for instance with a worsted weight (4) an I or J hook would probably work best.

As for how much yarn to buy, it depends on the size of your project.
