Advice on making a beading pattern
May 25, 2014 at 6:04:34 PM

I've been converting photographs and some artwork into beading patterns.  I prefer to use the Brickstitch setting for the pattern, but use Peyote stitching when I make the pattern since I make amulet bags and I like the flow of the pattern more.  I'm having some issues with getting the right settings.  I've played with it a bit, but just can't seem to get it right.  The pattern I'm working on now looked good on paper, but turns out to have way too many colors when I bead it and the image is lost.  Does anyone have any advice on maybe how to tweek the pattern generator to get a better result.  Above is the artwork of one of the patterns I'm working on now.  The pattern I'm using has 28 colors.

Wow.  This will be a challenge because of all the whites! Undecided

Have you tried limiting the number of colors in section 5?  You may try something like 10 colors.  Also, possibly limiting the number of colors and varying the contrast and/or brightness?

Also, have you tried setting shades of gray in section 5 and varying contrast?

Just a few ideas.  You've got my interest, though.  I'm going to try using a similar photo to see if I can tell what kind of settings are best to work with.

Playing around with settings may also give me an idea or two that I might want to add to the program to better handle something like this.

I'll let you know what I find out.

Terry

ps. Love the photo!

I just used a copy of your image that you posted and spent a bit of time playing around with several of the settings and did not see a combination that I really liked.

I then tested a new feature (setting) that I was going to implement at a later time and it really seemed to make a difference.  The first try returned a pattern with much more detail but I did not spend any additional time beyond that.  I'm guessing this might be a new staring point for you to try.

BUT...

The new feature is not in yet.  Let me add it and you can try it yourself.  I'll post an update message when it's up and running.  I THINK I'll have it in tonight.

Ok.  I just added a new option in section 8 called "Grayscale".  In testing, I got somewhat better results by choosing this option and then playing with other settings.

The biggest difference is that it first internally converts your image to shades of gray and then works with that.

Not sure if this will help but you may want to try varying the brightness and contrast with the "Grayscale" option box checked.

More information on this option is in this message.

Thanks so much for looking into this!  I love playing with the Pattern Wizard, look forward to trying your new feature!

(Sorry it took me so long to reply, crazy summer has taken me away from beading for a few weeks)
