Well cats are soooooo much easier to handle than a dog.. The cat just have to sit there, doing nothing, much like they do at home. This is how you show a cat: http://www.mainecoonbreedsociety.com/Images/moleybisdouble.JPG..

If you want a Husky one day, you will need to be patient.. Like... VERY patient.. They are tough to train properly. A lot of them will for example NEVER stop pulling in the leash when you walk it.. They WILL run if they get the chance, especially if they see something exiting.. Like a dear, or rabbit, or cat.... Or even another dog. Not all of them are good with other species. My dogs sister once chased, and killed a got, because the fence that normaly kept her in was torn apart in a storm. Her owner hadn't realised this, until she got a call from the police..

They are very fast, so if they get the chance they can, and properly will, chase down a deer just for the sport, and then kill it.. :s

They are not a cruel breed, they just have SO many instincts, just like an untrained dog for hunting. They simply can't control it.. And thats why you must always, with no exeptions, walk a husky with a leash..

Other than that, you'll need to be consistent in everything you say, you must never give up, and you must never show the husky your week sides.. It will remember.. So if you are firm in your training of it, you'll have the most wonderfull dog. Not everyone of them needs to run 10 miles a day to be happy, but the mental stimulation is very important, or else you will have a dog who runs on the walls...

Cats really do sit a lot at home...but I bet our sweetie would never sit still that long.

LOL, I'm not even sure I have the patience for an active kitten, let alone a husky! Years ago, it would have been wonderful, but now I doubt I could handle a husky.

I think with a lot of animals, even cats, their instincts take over at times...they really can't help themselves. Like the way our cat is with a spider. She has the shortest attention span in the world, but a spider meandering by turns her into the most patient kitty in the world! She'll stalk it...if it goes off into a corner or disappears under something that's too low to the ground, she'll wait and wait for it to return (even if there's another way out, though she doesn't realize it). She's very cutely comical...but that's pure instinct for her. Or the way she gets upset when there's a cat outside. No matter how much we explain to her, "No, that's outside...that kitty can't come in!" she doesn't get it and wants to go protect her territory! That instinct is so strong, just the smell of another kitty gets her going!

You know, in some ways, huskies sound just like cats...their instincts are so strong! Like with your dog's sister killing the goat...some of them really retain their instincts all of their lives! Can't really blame them...just the way nature made them. But I'm so glad you told me all of this, because now I know taking in a husky would not be a good match for us. Not that I'm at all unhappy with a cat.

Most cats will be patient in that position.. They only needs to be held that way for maybe 5 mins... You could try with your own.. I actually did it with my 3 cats.. My norwegian/maine coon mix loved being carried around that way.. But he was a bit special.. :p My 2 girls will accept it, for a small amount of time, and then they would do anything in their power to get loose.. Wink

They never participated in any shows, but it was easy for me to carry them around in that position, especially when we were at the vets office.. They calmed totaly down when I did this..

And with the instincts I agree, they simply cant help themselves..

The husky is a very funny dog breed, but you'll need a certain amount of patience with them, and there are a lot of things you would have to accept about them. Especially the leash thing..

And then of course - there is the shedding.. OH MY GOD THEY SHED A LOT!!!!!! But only for a period of 3 weeks, 2 times a year.. We have a whole snow landscape in pur living room these days.. It's crazy...

Maybe I'll have my husband try to hold our kitty like that first. She'll let him do just about anything! She lets him check in her ears and purrs all the way through it. She's not as patient for me. It really bothers my husband how she takes more to him than to me, but it doesn't matter...cats pick who they like for whatever reason...it's not a big deal! I still love her just as much.

Wow, how fantastic that your two girls don't mind being carried around like that, and especially, how it calms them down at the vet's office!

I wish we could do that with our girl...but pets at our vet's office waiting room must either be on a leash or in a carrier. I think about the only thing that calms her down then is when we leave! She doesn't want to get out of her carrier when we're there...and it's no problem to coax her back in it after!

Oh, yeah, instincts are very powerful for animals. I see that all the time with cats in my neighborhood...even today, we were awakened early by a cat fight.

Cats generally don't get along unless they've been brought up together, and that's so sad...if they could just be friends, it would be so much better! I hate breaking up cat fights, but it has to be done...of course, what often happens is that after I break up a cat fight and one of the cats has run off, the other then follows to finish the fight!

I just saved you from getting your butt kicked, and now you're asking for more?! ARGH!

I'm sorry to say that neither of us likely have the patience to deal with all that a husky would entail.

Probably the only way that would work out is if we adopted an already-trained older husky.

I never knew huskies shed so much!

That was actually the thought. I want to make yarn out of the wool she sheds.. It is SOOOOO warm, and so soft... And the most beautiful color.. The wool from my girl is almost silver..

Take a look at this video from around 4.25 you can see what I mean when i say they shed a lot.

Maybe a poodle for you then Wink

They are sooooo sweet.. They dont shed, they are easy to train, always happy :p And you kan make funny hair on them Cheesy

I'm jealous! Our kitty sheds some...but not enough to really make much wool out of it.

But husky fur...ooooh!

I didn't know how soft it was, but am not surprised. I bet that would make a gorgeous and warm scarf!

I think poodles are adorable! I suppose if I had one, I'd probably save the clippings (from the wild hair styles, of course!

) to make into yarn. Sadly, we can't have a poodle where we are now...no dogs allowed...but when we move, perhaps an older one...LOL, don't want to chase a young one around! I like rescues, anyway

, so I'm sure if we decided to go for an older poodle, we'd be likely to find one in a shelter. That's kind of what my late friend and her husband did...when their dog died, they went to a shelter and adopted an older dog...I forget the breed. He's sooooooo sweet! And I love the idea of adopting an older poodle that might otherwise not be adopted.

My girl sheds about.. 250 grams every time she sheds.. So there is more than enought for a scarf.. :p haha

Ohh yeah.. Rescues.. I want to do that, but I also want to show.. :/ I can't do that with a rescue dog, even though i would love to take in a rescue.. Sad

Clearly, unless it's an older, sedentary and already well-trained husky, that is definitely not the breed for us!

Definitely jelly about that shedding...wow, the possibilities for yarn!

I guess that's the thing about cats...short hair would be difficult to spin...and even long hair wouldn't be enough for much. Perhaps I need to become good friends with some husky owners!

Seeing all of that gorgeous fur on the floor in that video, I was just about drooling with envy!

I doubt I'll ever get into showing dogs or cats, so I'll only have rescues. I love them...they're generally quite well behaved and are very thankful to have a home.

Well, the cats are...I imagine the dogs feel the same way, though!

Not all rescue dogs are well behaved.. It is easier with cats, they are their own master.. But the dog who LOVES his humans, may have been mistreated etc etc, and therfore must learn how to trust people again. .The shelters do a top quality job though, but the dogs needs training still.

A lot of rescue dogs have som problems one way or the other. Some might be small problems, and some might be bigger. The dogs that have HUGE problems will be put to sleep.. It's the best for the dog though..

I think a rescue poodle would probably be better, then. I'm definitely not going to show dogs or cats - ever - and therefore am best getting a rescue. And if I can't find a poodle, really, does breed matter? Honestly, it doesn't matter at all to me.

As long as it's an older pet, well behaved, cat or dog (and dog would be dependent on my husband, too), and depending on where we end up moving to. (Also not sure I can talk my husband into adopting a dog!)

For me it's all about helping needy animals.

I have a feeling I'll really enjoy watching the dog shows...but showing a dog or cat myself isn't in the plans.

They will not throw you out.. They are a happy bunch of people. I am sure they will help you out with some wool..

Dog breed matter a lot.. It depends on what kind of person you are.. What you want to use the dog for. And so on, and so on, and so on..
It is not ideal for a person who just want's a dog who lies in the couch all day, to get a Rottweiler, or a German Shepherd.. They are both breeds who needs to work.
And it is not ideal for a person who wants to compete in defense work with the dog to get a pug.. Do you se where I am going?

I do however think that it is great that you want a rescue, no matter what species it is.. Especially an older rescue.. We want more people like you.. Cheesy

Oh, yes, you're so right about certain breeds being unsuitable for certain types of people! A high maintenance breed definitely wouldn't be the one for us.

That reminds me of a guy I used to know...he bought a dog because someone found out their child was allergic...and he worked so many hours that the poor dog was just left by itself all day.

That little dog craved attention, but the guy couldn't do anything about it, so he was looking to rehome the poor critter.

Awww, thank you...well, I definitely believe in rescues, particularly older ones. I love animals and would have a house full if our situation were different at the moment.

I'm glad we can at least have one furchild now and am looking forward to when we move and can have more!

I would love to send you some, but I think that the wool would be ruined on the way to the US.
OH and pleeeeeeaaaase show me the project you want to use the fur for.. Shocked

I think that it is sweet that people wants to help the animals, but people do not think that especially a dog takes up a lot of time.. Most dog can be home by them selves up to 10 hours.. But it is not ideal. My own dog will from August be home alone from 7am - 3pm.. Some times less.. But she doesn't care.. She sleeps all day.. But she is traines to be home alone for so long. And this is where people go wrong again when they get a dog.. They think that the puppy can just be home alone for a long period without getting sad, or borred.. :/

My neighbour (who I could strangle at this point), got a dog a couple of months ago.. The dog is 10 years old.. And oooooh my god.. It barks, and howls from the moment they leave their house, and it doesn't stop until they get home again.. -.-' Sometimes they leave at night to go get drunk, and the dog barks and howls until they get home again around 3-4am.. I am going crazy here... Tried to talk to them about the problem and they are like: "Oh, but we can't do anything about it... Because we are not home to stop it.. " argh.. They bought an old dog, because then it could be home alone, exept it can't.. :/ And they don't want to train it.. :/ I am very sad for this poor old dog.. :/

Well, I have to learn how to spin it first...have saved a bit of cat fur, but not enough for much. I've wanted to learn spinning for ages, so now that will give me an excuse!

I'm not sure what I'd make. Depending on how thick or thin the yarn turns out, I might just develop my own patterns for it...wouldn't that be cool?!

I'm also guessing my spinning abilities at first might not be all that even.

So allowing for that in patterns would be kind of fun!

It really is a consideration when a dog will be home alone all day, like with that guy's dog

Glad your dog doesn't mind.

I'm sure there are many that do, though. Even our cat doesn't like to be alone. She gets so depressed when we leave. She goes to sleep and won't do anything while we're gone...so the second we get home, she gets up, pees, poops, eats, whatever.

It's so important to realize pets get bored when home alone.

I have no doubt that your neighbors' dog needs training badly; poor thing is probably so bored and lonely and doesn't know what to do!

Plus, they're lucky the dog is "only" crying. Imagine if it were tearing apart the furniture and other stuff in the house...they'd be furious...and it would be all their fault!

I can't imagine letting a pet howl like that and not being concerned enough to do anything about it.

I'm with you...that poor old dog!

You can if you want, spin some sheep wool in the dog wool to give it strength..
I know one who have done that with succes.. The pure dog wool sheds a bit just like a very fine alpaca yarn would do..

And VERY cool with your own patterns Cheesy

(btw I'm still working on my cowl pattern :p )

About the dog.. I go for a long walk before i go out of the house, and on our walk we do some training where she have to use her nose.. It makes her mentally tired, and therefore more relaxed.. If I know that I will be gone for a long time, I have a friend who wil gladly take her for a walk..
It doesn't happen very often that I am longe gone. But it does happen 4-5 times a year.. And then it is nice to have someone who will gladly spend some time with the dog..

I love it..

I don't trust a lot of people with my dog, because she is so special, and not many would be able to handle her..
