Well, as much as I hate the idea, since I know what a pain it is...I'm sure you're right...you're going to have to. At some point, certain features won't work and then they'll (ugh) force you to upgrade.

Unfortunately, I'm not really familiar with it, but after a while it will undoubtedly be second nature...until they change it again.

But everything is still messed up. Tabs look different (though there's a theme to fix that), got the page title back again, will have to learn where the forward/back buttons are, as well as reload...and though I signed up for Sync, (which apparently isn't new) in anticipation of when my computer gets rebuilt, I had to turn it off because it was slowing things way down.

I'll probably turn it back on once the new system is up and running, right before installing Firefox, so I don't have the headache of moving everything over.

Yeah, just like everything else these days. Hate it when they mess with things that are working just fine.
Like microsoft finally produced a decent OS with XP, then they decided to re-engineer everything for Vista and the upgrade became a downgrade.

I still have a machine running XP that works very well, but at some point I'll have to give it up because nothing will be compatible.

Exactly...if it ain't right...please don't fix it!

Ugh, don't I know it about Vista...it's what I ended up with.

I've heard 7 is great...I really don't like 8 and haven't heard much that's good about it.

I agree...you're going to have to change over, and I'm guessing by then to 8, because from what I've heard, Microsoft wants to concentrate on more mobile-type devices, or something like that.

We are running 7 on this machine and while it's much better than Vista, I still think XP was better.

I'm looking at going linux on my machine, hubby is chained to MS with his games, that doesn't mean I have to be.

I've heard great things about 7 and XP. It's such a shame XP is old and not a current product.

Linux...cool! It's a learning curve, but I have no doubt you'll master it!

Kind of jealous here...I really wish I could do without Windows. I wish my favorite graphics program didn't require it.

I'm just thinking of the ordeal from today. I run an alternative PDF reader to Adobe...Adobe had become so cumbersome and I finally gave up on it. So I installed Foxit some time ago. It worked great...and then today I noticed it had put some malware on my system...UGH!

I just got finished with an ordeal where another program (a newly installed one) had put crapware on my system, and it took all day (and more) just to get it off of here. Now I can't even use the program that I've been using for so long to read PDFs.

I don't know what to use and where to find something that won't have malware!

I'd so much rather run Linux and not have to deal with this!

I hear you, I use a lot of free open source programs so when I recently did a windows reinstall I had to do it with all my programs as well.
Needless to say, I learned to be more careful of my source.

I really need to just start over on it now, it's just a matter of finding the time.

I'm pretty sure that my open source programs are linux based, open office has a PDF creator so I'd just have to find a reader.

Argh! How can you tell a program infected with malware from a program that isn't?

You really do have to be careful. But that was why I thought all was okay...I'd been using Foxit for such a long time and thought there was no trouble with it.

They went from being reliable to being totally sleazy!

I still haven't found any reliable way of telling about those stupid toolbars and malware.

Even a search for lists of programs on the web only talks about removal after your system has been infected. No, I want to know before, so I don't install it in the first place!

Does Open Office have a PDF reader, too? I would think if it can create them, it can also read them?

The good thing is most of the programs I've seen for Linux are completely free. It's only when you want name programs (like Microsoft Office) that you have to pay...but...why?! Why would you want a name brand program when you can get better for free?

Of course there's no way to know ahead of time.
But for instance there is a website (sourceforge I think) that used to be a very reliable place to get clean programs. This last time I downloaded from them, I got malware.

So I did some research and learned that some of the developers have moved away from them because of what they are allowing.

The best we can do is to try to make sure we are getting straight from the source, if possible.

I'll have to look and see if OO has a reader, I've had adobe and haven't had a reason to look.

I did a little more research on linux yesterday and found one they say works out of the box, so hopefully it will be as easy as installing windows.

Cross your toes for me please.

I used to rely on them!

I'm talking to hubby about ultimately getting malwarebytes. It has a 3-computer license...he won't use it, so I'll use it on here and my desktop computer. Not sure what the timeframe is, though. It's not terrible...$25 for a year...but it's still an unplanned purchase which wasn't a priority before and is moving up the list. At least it checks programs in real time, which I imagine is as you either download them in the first place or as you try to install them, so they can't put crap on your system!

I don't blame good developers from moving away from sourceforge over the malware issue. Malware is a very sleazy way of making money. If we had a downloadable software product, I would not want to make money that way. It's completely wrong. There are plenty of legitimate ways of making money, and honestly, if it came to that, I would rather have a software product that made no money than one that ruined people's computers and gave them headaches. Life is too short to fight with crapware.

I agree with downloading straight from the source...though these days, it's next to impossible! I tried to find the original source for a certain FLV player I really liked...it used to work great, but now it doesn't work anymore. So I went to install the new version, thought I had it from the source site...nope. Malware.

And that was the issue with Foxit, too...it's the actual company that's been updating their software with malware.

So now I need to switch, but I can't really do it until I get malwarebytes, because I'm so afraid whatever I install is going to have malware!

If OO doesn't have a reader, I'm sure there's a free program for Linux that does...may even be a free Adobe reader for Linux.

Oh, I think I can do you one better than crossed toes, LOL. I think I can talk someone who knows a lot about Linux into talking to you if you have trouble!

He uses Ubuntu Server...he says he's been pleased with it. You'd probably need Ubuntu Desktop...so if you go to:
http://www.ubuntu.com/
and then click on "Download" - you have to choose between 32 and 64 bit, depending on what you have, of course.

He said it's very easy...you download it, it goes right onto a CD, which is a bootable CD, and then it installs it on your system for you. He said it's very easy...and after all you've already done, I'm positive you won't have a problem!

Thank you, I'll dig around Ubuntu a little more, when I first looked at it all I saw was to download it to dvd. I have a dvd burner, but only cd's.

My machine is old by computer standards, so I hope the newer version works.

From what I understand (admittedly little, LOL!), it shouldn't matter if your computer is older...I seem to recall Linux is pretty undemanding on resources. (I'd ask hubby to verify that, but know better than to inerrupt him when he's in the middle of calculations, sigh.)

Got some crocheting in while sitting in front of the TV. Yeesh, is there anything more boring than counting rows?!

I tried burning the desktop version to a cd, it said not enough room.

So then I put it on a usb stick, went into my BIOS and told it to boot from the usb. Well the machine refused to comply.
Did another recommended download to create a bootable stick, but it still won't work.

I'm pretty sure that my machine is a 32bit, though I don't know how to find out for sure. I built it back when the dual core processors had just come out.

Golf, tennis, and baseball. Watching any of those is more boring than counting rows.

I'm asking hubby about this...he says Linux is dinky. I seem to recall that, as well...I vaguely remember the install from years ago.

All I can think is maybe the newer version might be bigger? He'll know in a second.

There's a trick to finding out 32 v 64 bit, but I can't remember.

Okay, he looked and said it won't fit on a CD, and as for the USB, you might have to write it as an ISO to get it to boot. Does that help at all?

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd also say 32 bit.

Basketball, football and hockey, too! I really dislike sports. They bore the crap out of me. LOL, guess I'd rather be counting stitches than watching any of those!

Well the file I downloaded to it was an iso (not that I know what to do with that).

So on the website they direct you to another download that is supposed to create a bootable stick, which I did.
But when I try to install, it tells me to insert the cd. So that was useless.

Football is ok, hubby is a Cowboys fan. Though I don't actually watch it, I'm aware of it.
But basketball, yeah I can get into that a bit.

Nobody watches sports. Hubby is too busy working, anyway, and I don't like them, so I don't watch them.

I don't watch that much TV, anyway. I just watch what I like...otherwise, the TV is off. I really don't like having it on for noise.
