Sherry,

Wow, phenomenal job!  It's so nice to see everything at a glance!  Kiss

I agree with you about how the knit gauge is closest with the I hook...sigh, but no drape and way too tight (found that out the hard way with the H hook, which should be close enough to produce similar results).

Do you think the differences are noticeable enough for pictures?

That's ingenious how you also noted the regular sc gauge for comparison.  Way different.  It's a shame nobody ever gives the gauge for Tunisian on yarn wrappers!  It would be so nice to know.

I also see what you mean about the P hook.  That is closest to the crochet gauge, and it's way off for garments.  Using Tunisian for a knitting pattern for a scarf might be no problem, or perhaps would need a pattern repeat or three eliminated, but something that really depends on size would call for a major readjustment.  Frown

I can't wait to hear your results on the bulky yarn!  Smile  Thanks for doing this and reporting your results!  Kiss  This is such great info!  Kiss

Melanie,
I don't think the difference would show up in pics, until I compare the K and L hooks.
That's the main reason I haven't been anxious to try and get pics. Wink

Tunisian was practically lost before there was a Yarn Council, so I'm not surprised that there are no "standards" on labels and such.

I'm also rethinking our "knit to tunisian" experiment, now I'm thinking that either crochet to tunisian, or chunky knits.

According to the CYC, a chunky yarn (or 5) has a knit gauge of 12-15 st per 4 inches on size 9-11 needles. So that puts us in the ballpark at least. Wink We can think of it as a chunky knit.
But, as always, a test swatch is a must if gauge matters.

I'm going to frog that lizard scarf, Tongue Out just too stiff to be suitable for wear.

Sherry,

Yeah, it didn't sound like there was enough difference between the swatches for pics, at least not in the smaller sizes.  Undecided

True about the "standards"...though you know how I feel about those...sigh.  And definitely true about Tunisian being lost before!

I agree...looks like "knit to Tunisian" will only work "sized down" - e.g., bulky to WW, WW to sport, sport to baby/fingering...if we really want to get that small.  LOL, which I don't!  Wink

Oh, yeah, according to the CYC knit gauge, I can definitely see how chunky goes to WW, because I was getting approximately 4 sts per inch with the H hook.  And you're right a test swatch is vital when gauge is important, as for a garment!

I agree...if the lizard scarf is too stiff, definitely frog it, sigh.  Frown  Is it going to be too wide with a wider hook?  Would you have to perhaps use fewer stitches?

Melanie,
We'll reserve our right to rant about those standards. Wink

On the scarf, I'll just have to do the math. Tongue Out

Sherry,

LOL, I love your way of thinking!  Kiss

As always, sigh, it comes down to math.  Tongue Out

Just thinking...I haven't looked at the book lately...perhaps there's a bulky pattern that would be better suited than the lizard?

Also, there are a lot of free scarf/cowl patterns that use bulky yarns...my go-to sites when I'm looking for something specific where I know there will be a ton of choices are Garnstudio and Lion Brand.  I'm sure there are others, but those sites have vast selections of nothing but free patterns!  Smile

I'm also thinking that since you've made the lizard once already, albeit in a yarn and stitch that turned out too stiff, perhaps you could redesign something altogether, using some of the same shaping ideas?  Smile

Another idea: you could redo the lizard in a Sport weight yarn...if you can find it, sigh.

Melanie,
I thought of sport, but even when you can find it the color choices are pretty limited.
Although I might go see if Herschnerr's has something suitable.

I've already made a few changes to it, so I may just scrap that one and make my own. Scarves really are easy, after all. Wink

Sherry,

Herrschnerr's is an excellent idea for sport yarn!  I agree...the choices really are limited.  Undecided  It's probably easier to deal with if you have a very large LYS with dozens of choices...but the big box stores are terribly limited, with the sport yarn selections being so disappointingly small...when they even have the sport yarns.  Frown

I agree...you can pretty much do what you want with scarves...that's the nice thing about them!  Smile  Are you still thinking lizard?  It would be so nice if what you did with the eyes could be something that's still useful!  Kiss

I'm embarrassed to say that I'm at a standstill with the mountain of dishcloths (plus other projects), and now I've added something else (pet sweater) to the long, long list.  Frown  Bought a skein of SS at JoAnn's for that...40% off, pretty pastel variegated, for someone who is determined to walk around with a tummy picked raw.  Cry  This is not going to go over well, but as it's a health issue, it will have to do.

But I really needed to be farther behind, sigh.  Guessing I'll be at this through November!  Yell

Melanie,
Isn't that what we do to ourselves though? Embarassed Add more and more WIPs til we get overwhelmed, then work feverishly to get them done, rinse and repeat. Laughing

I've still got half baked notions cooking in the back of my mind about that lizard scarf, so I don't know for sure yet. But I will certainly do something with those eyes.

I really do miss the Super Yarn Mart we had back in L.A., but they went out of business years ago.

Sherry,

We're gluttons for punishment!  Add more and more, then work, nose to the grindstone...just to add more work on top of that!  Wink

That said, back to TV again last night after a few days of none...finished one more dishcloth.  Smile  Two of set #2.

I'm so glad to hear you're going to use the eyes!  After all of that work, I was hoping you would!  Kiss

Wow, Super Yarn Mart...that must have been a really cool place...what a shame it went out of business!  Cry

Melanie,
Yeah, but it doesn't really seem like "work" does it? Kiss

It was a wonderful place with aisles and aisles of yarn, threads, tools, and kits.

I think today may be rather unproductive, granddaughter is officially in labor. Smile

Sherry,

You're right, it doesn't seem like work.  The only reason I just want it to be done, though, is because I want to play!  So many ideas to try.  I want to get to them and be done with the dishcloths already!

I'm now 3 down on set #2.  One more to go, then am more than 1/3 of the way done with all of the dishcloths.  Smile

Hope your granddaughter's labor is very short-lasting!  Kiss

Melanie,

I'm a great grandmama! Kiss He came into the world yesterday evening weighing in at 8 lbs 12 oz.
Mama and baby are doing well.

I'm glad you're getting through the dishcloths. I know it feels like they'll never get done when you have so many other things you want to try. Tongue Out

Sherry,

Congrats, great grandmama!  Kiss  Wow, that is one big boy!  Smile

Glad to hear your granddaughter is well.  Smile

Those dishcloths really do feel like they're going on forever!  Yell  And yes, I still want to play!  Smile

Congrats again!  Kiss

Melanie,
Thank you, I get to go see him today. Kiss

My niece arrived and is stitching those swatches into a throw. Smile So I taught her the TKS so she can make more to go with it. Looks like I may have to buy another P hook.

She really loves the way it works up so thick (she says fluffy). Laughing

I'm still working on that cabled scarf, it's going slowly with so many cables but I have enough to get a pic now. It was supposed to be a birthday gift, and her birthday was last week. Frown

Sherry,

Woo hoo!  Kiss  I'm sure you'll have a lovely time!  Kiss

How is she putting the swatches together?  Is she sewing them (LOL, the way you and I hate to do it)?  Or is she crocheting them together?

That's perfect how she can make more of them now for enough to make a throw!  Kiss  I think you definitely will need to get another P hook!  Kiss

Fluffy...that's a fantastic term for it!  Kiss  It really is such a nice, supple stitch, with plenty of yarn to make it thick and warm.

Awww, I'm sure she'll understand!  Kiss  A beautifully handmade gift is worth the wait.  And no worries, I'm still working on December, so you're doing far better than I am!  Embarassed

I did finish 2 sets of dishcloths so far (out of 5), except for the last steps of working in the ends.  I also started on set #3 and completed one dishcloth from it.  Finishing set #3 will at least be more than halfway done...and I can only hope there's enough yarn for a fifth set, because last time, there wasn't.  Frown  But then, that was counting at least 3 "discards" which are now my own dishcloths.  So hold your breath that there will be enough!
