Hi, Theresa!  Welcome!  Smile

I haven't personally made anything quite as big as a graphgan...afghans, yes, graphghans, no!  Tongue Out  Is it your actual base row that's giving you trouble?

If that's the case, what I would suggest is picking kind of a "border" color and starting out with a row of that as a solid color.  From there, it should be much easier to change colors than if you try to start your base row with a bunch of colors.  Smile  You could then repeat that same color at the very top after you're done (for uniformity), and if you want it to be uniform all the way around, add a stitch or three at the sides in that same color, so your border is roughly the same thickness of your top & bottom stitches.

If you're working the entire afghan in single crochet, you could make a base of doubles to make it a thicker border, or work more than one row of singles, perhaps two or three.

And another option for the sides is rather than adding stitches on each side in the pattern, wait until you're finished and add a row or three of singles (or a row of doubles) after.

Hope that helps!  Smile  If I've misunderstood, please don't hesitate to let me know.  Smile

Hi Theresa and welcome. Might be easier to give suggestions if you'll tell us what you have in mind for a specific project.
I, for one, love talking crochet.
