iPhone use is pretty slick with the FreePatternWizard!

Due to Apple's great integration with IOS and Safari, using the FreePatternWizard can be even easier and slicker to use!

Let's say you want to create a .pdf cross stitch pattern of your little kitty.  With an iPhone, simply run the FreePatternWizard (I have a touch icon button on my iPhone home screen).

In section 1, click on the "Choose File" button.  If you already have an image saved on your phone, tell it to use that image.  But even slicker, Apple also gives you the option to "Take photo or Video" to take a new picture.  So track down your little one, let her pose, and snap a photo.  Then click on the "Use" button.  You'll see a tiny thumbnail of your photo pop in section 1.

Then simply continue through the rest of the pattern options.  In our case, we would click on "Cross Stitch" in section 2.

In section 7 we would pull down and click on "Pattern in .pdf Format".

That's really all that's necessary to get a pattern, although there are lots of other options available.

Finally, in section 9, click on "Let's See My Pattern!".

Your iPhone will upload your image and you'll see the cover sheet of your new pattern.

Your pattern will be saved on your iPhone as a .pdf pattern.

You can find your pattern in your iBooks library.  While still viewing your pattern just created, click on the image and then on "Open in iBooks".  If you're no longer looking at your pattern, simply open your iBooks library.  On one of your iBooks shelves will be a nicely spiral-bound little booklet with your pattern cover sheet showing.  Click on that and it will open up your pattern.

You can view it, email the pattern, or even print it to an "AirPrint" printer.

So in about 8 or 9 clicks, you can use your iPhone to take a picture, create a pattern, and save it.

A few notes:
  1. You'll probably want to make some setting changes to reduce the number of colors selected in your final pattern
  2. In the current PatternWizard version, you'll want to turn your iPhone so the "Home" button is on the right when taking a photo for a pattern.  Otherwise the photo will be sideways or upside down.  (A future version of the PatternWizard will allow image rotation).
  3. Realistically you'll probably want to pre-take the image and do cropping before creating a pattern, however scenic views would be fine.  (A future version of the PatternWizard will also allow cropping and more live image preview viewing).
  4. The .pdf output option is only available to logged-in Stitchboard members.  (Remember, membership is totally free so Join Now!)

Have fun!

I am using iPad and somehow I could not choose picture on section 1. The "choose file" button is in grey and when I try to click on the button, it doesn't work. Help!

Hi, and thanks for writing.

Ok, we'll work together to get this figured out and working...  I must say I have never personally tested it with an iPad so it could very well be a small change that I need to make to the code.  We'll get it working.

Here's what it should look like (these were done on my iPhone using IOS 6.1.3 but that really shouldn't matter too much.)

Before entering a file from which to create a pattern, it should look roughly like this:

Then when you click on the "Choose File" button, since we're working with an Apple device (iPhone or iPad 2+), you should see an option to use an existing photo or take a new one on the fly:

But I get the impression you cannot even press the "Choose File" button.

Could you please let me know your iPad version, and if possible, the IOS Version?

Thanks.

Terry
