Sthon,

Yes, you're correct, you do need a starting chain.  You could attempt to make your chain in different colors, but IMO, it's not necessary.  I'd just use the dominant color.  Your chain is such a small part of the project, and if you choose to add an edging later, such as a shell or plain single crochet border, then it's not going to matter, anyway (in which case I'd tend to use the planned border color for the chain).  For this, I'd say it's more a matter of personal choice.  If you're really persnickety, you could follow the color pattern, but for me, meh, too much trouble for not much result!

Also, not to confuse you, you could have a couple of rows of one color of single crochet both before and at the end of your afghan (and extra single crochets at the sides, as well), so it really is a matter of personal choice.  Smile

Row one is your first row of single crochet.  Smile

Ok,
so just to clarify on how to "read" the pattern, does each rechtangle represent a stitch? And do you recomend going from the bottom up or side to side?

Paula,

Welcome!  Smile

Yes, each rectangle is a stitch.

If you're crocheting, you would start at the bottom and read your first row after chaining from right to left, then the following row is read left to right.

would you start with your foundation ch. the reverse sc row 1 from left to right then alternate regular sc right to left and reverse sc left to right on the rows?

Chris,

Your foundation chain actually doesn't appear in the pattern; your pattern reading starts with row 1, so you would do that right to left, then reverse left to right.  Smile
