Custom aspect ratios?
June 25, 2016 at 5:28:21 PM

Hi all,
Is there any plan for custom aspect ratios in the future?  My 4" x 4" crocheted gauge swatch was 14 stitches by 16 rows.  This is an aspect ratio of 0.875.  I've read here that your standard single crochet (which is what I used) is an aspect ratio of 0.75 and obviously a square has an aspect ratio of 1.

Based on my gauge, it seems my graphghan will be distorted either way and my image won't come out correctly.  Sad  This is a huge bummer as I was so glad to be able to turn this image into a graph.  I did a large Michigan Block M (for university of Michigan) which came out good using a square size pattern, but it doesn't matter if a big M is slightly wider, it still looks like an M.  The design I'm working on now has circular sections and writing on the diagonal.  So having correct gauge would be critical.

If you have already started working on this or some way you can input gauge and have the graph adjust, I would LOVE to test it out for you.

Thanks,
Jessica

Hi, Jessica.

Sorry I answered you via email!  I didn't look carefully.  We really, really appreciate it when users ask questions through the Community, which you did!  Thank you!  So I'll also answer you here so others can see.

Anyway, in answer to your message, thanks for your feedback.  It's very important to us!

Yes, we definitely have plans for custom ratios.  We're working through a prioritized "things to do" list and anytime someone asks about a feature we move that up on our list.  Not sure yet what the timing is for this feature but it is coming.

During the next few months there will be several new things happening.  New features, hopefully new looks, and new ways to do things.  We'll probably always keep the existing looks and operations available for those more comfortable.  So you'll be able to select the "classic" view if you want.

Regarding testing the new aspect ratios, I'll add you to the list of testers for this feature.

Jessica,

Welcome!  Smile

Thanks for letting us know you're looking for this function!  As Terry explained, we do look for suggestions and try to prioritize them based on requests we've received.  We've got quite a long list (over 100 features!), so knowing what features people want the most is very helpful.

Thank you also for offering to test the function for us!  We're always interested in people who can test functions as we develop them and give good feedback based on actual use.  Smile

Hi guys,
I have a workaround for anyone that wants to do this before you guys integrate it into the software.  My graph looks stretched, but by my calculation it will be perfect when I crochet it.

My stitch ratio is 0.875 rather than 1.  My photo was 415 pixels wide and 500 pixels tall.  I used GIMP (free from Gimp.org) to alter my photo size.  500/0.875 = 571.  So I altered my photo to 415 pixels wide and 571 pixels tall.  I then used this stretched picture with the tunisian square crochet pattern maker.  I got a pattern that is 150 stitches wide by 207 stitches tall.  Without alteration, the pattern was 150 x 181.  207 * 0.875 = 181 so my math seems to check out.

It will be MONTHS before I have a finished pattern to double check, but I'm confident this will work.  My pattern looks funny - I'm sure when you guys get this done you will leave the picture the right size ad change the grid itself so it doesn't look funny.  But this will work for now!

Jessica,

Wow, thanks for all of that great info!  Kiss  Please do keep us informed of your progress, perhaps share some pictures as you go along, if you don't mind.  You're a genius!  Kiss
